Kenya Barris, widely known for his work on blackish and its derivatives, have recently managed to establish themselves in the world of animation, thanks to entergalactic. The production is a collaboration between Barris and fellow EP Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and serves as a companion to the latter’s recently released self-titled album. Originally conceived as a complete television show, the 90-minute special manages to create a visually stunning world filled with layered characters. That said, one can’t help but wonder if the fictional universe could return for future seasons or via another special. Well, Barris shared some thoughts on that.
entergalactic centers on Kid Cudi’s Jabari, a young artist who wonders if he has time for a love life when starting a new job. His neighbor, local photographer Meadow (voiced by Jessica Williams), makes her think again, as the two fall in love. Although they have their ups and downs, they end up together when the credits start rolling. Anyone who has been able to see the series knows that it certainly leaves the door open to other stories involving the two main characters and their friends. So when I spoke to Kenya Barris on the special, I asked her if this could be the beginning of a franchise. Barris didn’t go into details, but it looks like he and Kid Cudi would like to do more with these characters:
We have many ideas. We would like to bring those characters back, maybe we would like to make an IP that we can do. [somewhere] more, do you know what I’m saying? Scott and I can do an EP and go do another version of that and bring the same kind of thing to someone else. We’d love to bring those characters back. Hopefully people fall in love with these characters and want to see many more seasons, you know? We got a lot of ideas that we pitched, leaked, [and have] Ready to go.
Well, this is an upbeat update if I’ve ever heard one, and one can only imagine what kind of funny and sweet stories can still be told here. There is still a lot to do when it comes to the romance between Jabari and Meadow. There are also humorous insights to be drawn from the character of Jimmy (played by Timothée Chalamet), who is Jabari’s best friend and drug dealer. It would also be interesting to see how Vanessa Hudgens’ Karina adapts to her motherhood after giving birth to her baby.
Besides the stories themselves, another important part of it all is the music, which warmly envelops the special. Scott Mescudi has been creating incredibly moving tracks for years and his work on entergalactic The Grammy winner is very meticulous in his work and may want to take his time in case some sort of follow-up occurs. During our conversation, Kenya Barris spoke of Mescudi’s “passion”:
The most important thing for Scott was that, and this shows his passion, he kept this music for almost three years. … They happened, do you understand what I mean? These are favorites. And for an artist to continue this music when it’s his career and people have been releasing music for so long, it shows the kind of intentionality and passion behind it.
Furthermore More Kid Cudi Entertainment Titles It is also worth asking whether Kenya Barris could jump straight to a sequel. Barris recently wrote, directed and produced the Netflix series your peoplea comedy with Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill . He also partnered with the broadcast company a The Vince Staples show, in which he performs as an EP. And as if that weren’t enough, Barris is ready too write and direct a reinvention of The Wizard of Oz for Warner Bros.
Hopefully, Kenya Barris and Kid Cudi can do something together to expand this animated universe they have created. It would be in Barris’ wheelhouse, as she has built many worlds with him blackish before ending his career this year . All time, Barris may also continue to learn from Kidi Cudi , who says he taught her some key lessons about creativity during this process. Hopefully, the two have a chance to team up again and say more about Jabari, Jessica and company.
