The film is set in Japan during World War II. A boy named Mahito leaves Tokyo with his father and moves to the countryside after the tragic death of his mother in a fire.

Released on July 14 in Japan, The boy and the heron gathered 4.9 million viewers in the archipelago. Its release date in France is set for November 1. Its French premiere will take place in Lyon during the Lumière Festival on Tuesday, October 17.
