When John Carpenter’s original Halloween was released in 1978, no one could have predicted he would be one of the best horror movies of all time or the cultural phenomenon it has become. In thirteen films, two remakes and three remakes, Michael Myers has haunted all of our collective nightmares for 44 years. While Michael has become the spooky face of the iconic franchise, another face closely related to the show is that of actress Jamie Lee Curtis. David Gordon Green end of halloween (One of the biggest upcoming horror movie releases ) and he the final Halloween movie in the recent trilogy produced by Blumhouse and marks Curtis’ final performance as the character he made so iconic. That said, the actress reflects on what she brought to the role of Laurie Strode decades ago.
The horrible friday The star attended the latest New York Comic Con, where she was interviewed by talk show host and former horror film Drew Barrymore (of Scream celebrity). Jamie Lee Curtis has long talked about his continued involvement with Halloween and why she was first attracted to the role of Laurie Strode, which is that Laurie was nothing like her. The actress told Barrymore that her role gave her a chance to stretch as an actress uh :
So when I was 19, I wasn’t like Laurie Strode. Laurie Strode was an actor role. You know, you would have hired me to play Linda. She was just a little sarcastic and a little promiscuous, but she wasn’t Laurie Strode. What was surprising to me was [it was] an actor role. He didn’t look like me, he didn’t dress like me, he didn’t think like me. I just finished high school. She was like the best student in her class. There was a real opportunity for me to be an actor. She hadn’t had this chance before. For me it was great.
The actress’s reasoning is logical. She saw her lead role in John Carpenter’s original film as an opportunity to play a very different character to her and an opportunity to grow as an actress. Before the hit horror film of the 70s, she could have played the role of Linda but, after the shock of that original film and the star’s brilliantly subdued performance, it’s impossible to imagine anyone else in the role.
Jamie Lee Curtis has had the rare opportunity in four decades to see her character grow and age with her, to the point where the two have become intertwined. It’s nearly impossible to imagine the horror movie landscape without Curtis as Laurie. Or what the actress’s life would be like if she hadn’t accepted her role. During the panel she continued:
At this point, Jamie and Laurie hugged. There is no separation. I would have nothing in my life without Laurie Strode. Whatever. I wouldn’t have a career. I wouldn’t have a family … Everything that was beautiful in my life came from this shitty little office on Cahuenga Boulevard in Hollywood, which was the size of these two chairs, when John Carpenter and Debra Hill [producer and co-writer of the first film] throw me like Laurie Strode.)
The star continued to joke, but not before attributing everything that has been beautiful in her life to Carpenter and Hill who risked, who when she dies the headlines will say:
Three words: the Halloween actress dies.
Well, I think I can speak for all horror fans when I say that the slasher subgenre wouldn’t be the same without our original Scream Queen. Hopefully this day and these headlines won’t stay long. At least until Curtis gets a chance to reprise his role in another Halloween reboot. for those who are ready Halloween: H60? Right now, though, take a look at what’s coming up in this next trilogy:
While Blumhouse’s first entry in the rebooted trilogy was praised by both critics and fans, the 2020 sequel Halloween killsThe critical reception was much more divisive. Despite my problems with the film, I’m thrilled to see Jamie Lee Curtis’ Swan Song as the character he created more than four decades ago.
end of halloween opens in theaters and in streaming (for those with a Peacock subscription) on October 14th. And be sure to keep an eye on 24 News Bulletin’s upcoming movie lineup.
