The doors of the Glee Club will reopen for the hour of a documentary. Commissioned by Discovery+ and ID, a three-part show will go behind the scenes of the hit series. Happinessbroadcast between 2009 and 2015 on the American channel Fox.
Several former lead actors, as well as relatives and close friends of the crew members, will be called to testify, in particular about the filming conditions of the series, created by Ian Brennan, Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy.
A series with many controversies
Composed of six seasons, Happiness tells the story of an American high school singing club and its director Will Schuester. The series follows the evolution of the musical company and addresses the different personal stories of the members of the Glee Club.
Currently untitled, this documentary will return to the many controversies that have marred the series’ broadcast. In particular, the story of Mark Salling, the actor who played the character of Puck, who was arrested for possession of child pornography, will be discussed. After pleading guilty, the young man was found hanged in January 2018, two months before his trial.
The filming of Glee was also greatly affected by the death of one of the main cast members, Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson), who suffered an overdose of alcohol and drugs in 2013, at the age of 31. In 2020, another actress, Naya Rivera (Santana López) drowned during a boat trip with her son on Lake Piru. She was 33 years old.
Among other controversies, this documentary will highlight the accusations of harassment on the film set, filed against Lea Michele, ex-girlfriend of Cory Monteith, who also played his partner Rachel Berry in the series.
