Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, has been one of Hollywood’s biggest box office draws for two decades. But he wasn’t always like that, especially early in his Hollywood career, when he transitioned from professional wrestling to acting. So Hollywood was telling him to get rid of any brands that the public liked. Denying significant aspects of his past would have made him less authentic and more pretentious for viewers who first got to know him as a professional wrestler. Fortunately, he was able to turn those early Hollywood games into a potentially gripping cinematic performance.
But there was a period in The Rock’s career where he dropped the nickname and walked away from WWE. Of course, at the time, it seemed like the right move if Johnson wanted to have a real career in Hollywood. He admitted that he fueled criticism in the beginning before realizing that he is not himself. Thinking about his early engagements helped him understand Black Adam’s story. He explained:
There was a lot of stuff like that that was said to me and if you don’t know it better, you believe it. And I bought it for a couple of years before thinking, ‘Now it’s over. And I will be myself and at least if I fail I will stop being myself. So, I took advantage of it, because a lot of those elements are the ones that surround Black Adam’s life. And the existence of him to be told ‘you have to do it this way’.
