Spoilers ahead for episode 4 of Chicago fire Season 11, titled “The Center of the Universe”.
Chicago fire had to face the aftermath of the tragedy in “The Center of the Universe” as Viola fought with the death of hawks at the end of the previous episode. When the whole firehouse wanted to be there for her and Brett Yes lad made deliveries of care packages, it was Severide continuing with a story (and a six-pack) that recalled some past tragedies that took her out of her apartment and back to work.
The show has undergone so many changes in eleven seasons that it can be easy to overlook some of the defeats of the early days. Severide showed up in her apartment, invited himself and took Violet on a trip back in time when she was still years away from joining the Firehouse 51 team. The two hardest things I’ve been through have been losing Shay and losing [Anna]. And for a long time after Anna died, I felt like a ship leaving the dock, just lost, with nothing to hold on to. I don’t like to think about how well I could have sounded if I didn’t go back to work. This is just my opinion, having been where you are.
His words impressed Violet (and probably fans), but she confessed that she was afraid of seeing Evan everywhere if she went back to the firehouse. Severide, who could probably understand him very well after losing Shay – told him that he also saw Anna everywhere he went “for a long time”, but he saw even more clearly his team at 51 when they controlled him.
Although she was in tears at the end of their conversation, Violet also clearly appreciated the way he opened up to her and revealed that someone really understood what she was going through. Her speech also honored not only Anna, but Shay as well. And the speech worked! Violet is back at work, she made a rather miraculous rescue on her first phone call with Brett and she felt comfortable enough to stop by Severide’s office for a few more words of wisdom when she needed to figure it out. . My feeling is that all you can do is think about them, talk about them as much as possible, somehow it’s like they’re still there.
Violet was excited again after sharing her advice, and I have to admit I was too! Chicago fire he has said goodbye to many characters over the years, some more permanently than others. An occasional mention like Severide reminiscent of Shay and Anna is nice to look at, if a little sad too.
Only time will tell if these conversations with Severide will help bring Violet far enough to where she is done with her on-screen duel, and it seems clear that her association with Brett makes her stronger when she needs support.
