Dutch Crown Princess Amalia, 18, is forced to live with her parents instead of her student accommodation in Amsterdam due to threats and is only leaving to attend university, the royal family said on Thursday. Recently, security measures around the princess have been considerably tightened because the authorities fear an attempted kidnapping or attack.
The situation is “really very difficult”, King Willem-Alexander told a news conference during a state visit to Sweden. According to Queen Máxima, the threats surrounding the princess – who is in the first year of her degree in politics, psychology, law and economics (PPLE) – have “enormous consequences” in her life.
“She hasn’t left the house. That means she doesn’t live in Amsterdam, she can’t really go out. The consequences are very difficult for her,” the queen said, visibly moved. “It’s not a student life for her,” added the royal couple, who live in The Hague.
Security services mobilized “day and night”
Prime Minister Mark Rutte described the situation as “terrible” and said he was “very worried”, Dutch public television NOS reported.
“I guarantee you that our security services are working hard day and night to ensure your safety,” Justice and Security Minister Dilan Yesilgöz-Zegerius said on Twitter.
The popular Dutch newspaper From Telegraaf reported in September that security had been tightened around the princess due to underworld threats also targeting the prime minister.
