werewolf at night it’s a different kind of beast (no pun intended) than other productions set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Critically acclaimed Marvel Halloween Special is a delightfully chilling thriller that pays homage to the characteristics of the creatures of the past. Later, even the show set monsters for the MCU (and their roles in the fictional world full of superheroes will apparently grow from here). As you can imagine, the project had yet to tick many of the usual “Marvel boxes”. However, as writer Heather Quinn explained, there was a typically crucial aspect of the cinematic universe that she and her collaborators didn’t have to worry about.
There are a number of things audiences expect from any MCU, like great action sequences and devious Easter Eggs. Of course, another important element is continuity, and die-hard fans of the franchise love to follow its extended timeline. Things are a little more ambiguous werewolf at night, as it is not entirely clear when the events of the special will actually take place. It is even difficult to say whether this is happening today or in the early 20th century. During my recent interview with Heather Quinn, I asked her about the show’s position in the timeline and she gave me some honest thoughts on how she (and co-writer Peter Cameron) addressed:
I mean, to be honest, I feel nervous. [answering] that … if it’s not turned on [the] nowadays so I don’t know [laughs]. But I can also say that I like it, because it’s an independent thing and we were exploring this new corner. [of the MCU], we haven’t really dealt with time as other properties would. Like in Hawkeye, I mean, we always had to be aware of the different scenes and how things fit together and flicker … We had to be aware of that. And in that sense, I guess we had the freedom not to. So if there is a secret answer [about when the special takes place], I do not know. This is the most truthful answer.
So it appears that the writer was given some leeway when it came to the relationship of the special with the official MCU timeline. While she (along with her colleagues) did a masterful job of managing things Hawk eye, you have to imagine that he took the opportunity to do something that was more of a piece in its own right. Such a thing is also refreshing for those who have been following the franchise for over a decade. Sure, Easter eggs and subtle winks are fun, but it’s nice to see a more self-contained Marvel Studios production.
Of course, what’s also interesting about Heather Quinn’s comments is that she really feels werewolf at night it is a contemporary story. Honestly, it would make sense for this dark story to take place in the present. After all, Marvel is very likely to want its new faces Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone and Man-Thing aka Ted to reunite with the main characters of the cinematic universe. (Of course, we may always find later that the aforementioned newcomers are somewhat immortal.)
In that sense, rookies are still a bit of a mystery at this point, but it’s hard not to like them. Werewolf Jack Russell has proven to be an easily recognizable character, as has veteran monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone. And of course, Man-Thing (what was important for this particular story) apparently stole the hearts of Marvel fans. Her relationship with Jack is particularly tender and one day she may rival the romantic relationship between Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes.
In all, werewolf at night definitely leaves us with a number of questions – some that fans will definitely discuss for a while. What is clear, however, is that people have chosen the new MCU heroes that Heather Quinn introduced in Michael Giacchino’s Halloween special. I can’t wait to see you again and hope this show is just the first of a wave of stand-alone specials with Marvel characters .
werewolf at night is now available for streaming (opens in a new tab) with a Disney + subscription and make sure you stay up to date on Marvel TV shows coming soon and special.
