Star Trek: Lower Decks is a show that prides itself on referencing the beloved franchise it originated from and does a great job of creating them (as evidenced by the huge encore in the third season premiere ). Freeman did this because he feared a visiting reporter would judge the ship and its crew, thinking it was an unprofessional Starfleet ship, which would put her in a bad light. The four main protagonists watched in horror as the cakes were thrown into the garbage and all their hard work and training was in vain. However, as mentioned, we did see that Mariner had a lot of blueberry spots on her body, as seen in the photo below:
Blueberry pie is not often mentioned in star Trek.
