There has been so much movement and confusion about it wonder movie coming soon that it’s easy to forget that the mutants were pushed further down the program list to make way for Kang the Conqueror, two Avengers and the one chosen as the Fantastic Four . This is not to say that mutants have not been mentioned in the MCU to date. There was a very deliberate reference to those who exist in the Mrs. Wonder end, and Sir Patrick Stewart resurrected Professor Charles Xavier – although it is a multiverse version of the character – in Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness. So the mutants are on set, so to speak. But they certainly deserve a proper and massive presentation nonetheless … and someone with a long history with the X-Men has a very good idea of what the concept of mutants in the MCU should be like. Let’s dive in.
Writer and director Michael Dougherty regularly dabbles in horror and comedy content. He recently drove the bombastic Godzilla: the king of monsters and helps to write hell for television. But as far as superheroes go, Dougherty also co-wrote the superman returns and contributed a lot to X2: X-Men United and history for X-Men: Apocalypse. So he knows the mutants and he knows the MCU. And when Dougherty sat down with the ReelBlend podcast We asked him how, given the chance, he would introduce mutants into the existing MCU, he opened up and he said:
It’s complicated, because I love the whole perspective of the multiverse that all the comic companies are taking now. Les mutants occupent évidemment une place très spéciale dans mon cœur, et s’ils vont évidemment entrer dans le MCU, et j’ai l’impression que ce serait too easy si un portail lumineux s’ouvrait et que les X-men venaient d ‘Enter. But I want to, and I’m also a huge fan of science. I feel that the most interesting organic way for mutants to enter the MCU would be for mutants to begin to evolve naturally as a result of all the trauma and destruction that humans have had to go through due to all the battles, invasions and all. rest. were presented. It is as if Mother Nature is starting to develop mutants as a survival mechanism. That’s because all the Avengers have faced Thanos, Snap, and everything we’ve had to endure – innocent bystanders of humanity during the destruction of the MCU. Of course, we started evolving into mutants as a survival mechanism. Because that’s the point.
I love this idea. Because, like Michael Dougherty, I would be extremely disappointed if the X-Men (and the Fantastic Four, for that matter) made their way into the MCU simply by moving out of a separate universe and saying, “Hey, we’ve been there., Fully formed, to. all this time … and now we’re here! So, mutating the gene as a reaction to innocent humans facing the chaos around them in multiple stages of the MCU makes sense, at the comic level anyway.
Since Patrick Stewart has appeared in the MCU and only Hugh Jackman confirmed its presence in Dead pool 3 Dougherty makes it clear that his idea doesn’t completely rule out these veterans. Tell ReelBlend:
That’s not to say that, you know, Hugh (Jackman) and Patrick (Stewart) and those guys maybe can’t help these New Mutants evolve. To protect them and make sure the mutants in the MCU obviously have a good chance. But I think that to create a new generation of mutants for today’s audience, and also to give them a real chance, I’m more interested in seeing how nature does the right thing again and gives humans one, because we are. Just been, you know, criticized like a bunch of extras in these movies for, what is it, for 15 years now?
Part of me believed that was what we were getting into. Vision of Wandawhat was Wanda’s impact on the people of the city she took it would change forever , giving rise to the mutant community. This does not happen. At least not yet. But maybe Kevin Feige will read this and contact Michael Dougherty, because the man has a great idea. Listen to the full conversation here:
