OG Scream writer on whether the franchise can go on forever

First ScreamJamie Kennedy’s Randy Meeks warned Sidney Prescott: “This is the moment when the alleged dead killer comes back to life, for one last scare.” And although the last girl assured us that this wouldn’t happen in her film, there The franchise refuses to die. The series has held up, churning out sequels of a fairly high caliber since 1996 (except for Part 3. We’re not talking about that or Roman). But how long can the franchise continue to evolve and remain relevant? According to the original film’s writer Kevin Williamson, potentially forever.

While attending the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, Kevin Williamson sat down for an interview with collider to talk about his latest horror film, Sick. The talk then focused on the beloved franchise he helped launch with horror icon Wes Craven. The screenwriter said this when asked if the show could go on forever:

Yes. At first I might have thought otherwise, but now that I’ve been proven wrong many times, and that the latest Scream was a pleasure, I think one of the wonderful things about Scream is that there’s a different killer in every movie, while who the most, you know, Halloween and Friday [the 13th], there’s Jason, there’s Michael, there’s Freddy; they won’t change Ghostface with every movie, so we have the option to change the motif and change the story, and we can always reverse it. It was supposed to be a turning point from the start. So the trick is how to keep evolving the game? And I think about this new team that I’m working with [is] incredible. They are absolutely fantastic. They are wonderful human beings. They are talented and it was a pleasure to be part of this new regime.

Kevin Williamson is right. Ghostface’s ability to switch between movies allows the series to do so a kind of freedom to evolve and adapt over time in ways other slashers have no room for. Halloween had to reset its timeline no less than three times to update the franchise, shake off decades of bad sequels, and justify Michael Myers’ return to keep fans engaged and the series profitable. end of halloween (the thirteenth film in the series) must have taken a few significant and polarizing changes tell a new story. But the Scream The franchise has been positioned to continue as long as fans are willing to keep showing up in theaters to see the masked teens, without having to reset timelines.

In addition to his frequent meta-comments, the mysterious aspect of the films also poses the Scream franchise apart from other films of its kind. While other slashers rely on directors who come up with twisted reasons to bring back to life the great evil of their film, which often gets more savage and paranormal with each release, this series changes the identity of the iconic Ghostface mask every time. With an ever-evolving villain, the horror giant was able to stay relatively cool, making it one of the best horror movie series of all time. This year, the highly acclaimed fifth slasher episode is out, with the sixth film already approved and shot.

Hopefully Kevin Williamson is “thrilled” with the series as he was working on the fifth installment. It is always amazing to see that the creator still has an active hand in creating him.
