It took a movie buff Twitter to share (Retweeted Bruckner) a fascinating behind-the-scenes look, no doubt about the weak, vomited stomach, at one of the film’s most impressive practical effects. At the end of the film, one of the film’s protagonists, the slimy millionaire Roland Voight, is momentarily freed from the gift of the liminal setting of the Cenobites. The configuration manifested itself as a metal tool embedded in Voight’s chest. We see the villain’s body painstakingly regenerating once freed. The fan’s tweet shows that the effect has been practically achieved. Now just warning if you are sensitive to blood.

disgusting isn’t it? But also beautiful, especially considering the hours of time and artistry it took the team behind these effects to make something so chilling and disturbing. This kind of attention from the directors is appropriate for a series born with an emphasis on practical effects. Clive Barker’s 1987 original, although made on a relatively small budget, had some of the best horror makeup images. Remember a skinless Frank? Well, it still holds up even after three decades, which is why, in my opinion, hell 1987 is one of the best horror movies always. hell 2022 is a worthy reinterpretation of Barker’s original.
Bruckner and his team didn’t stop at the transformation scene when it came to working with practical effects. in one Interview with the Hollywood reporter Earlier this year, he revealed that the puzzle box, which requires more setups than we’ve seen in previous films, was pretty much done, like all cenobites. The manager said:
… Each box is practical, and each Cenobite is practical. We had a very hands-on approach to the film that fits into the franchise, but there was an increase in visual effects. There were times when we went digital, but we tried to be very, very judicious about when it was going to happen. Especially in horror, CGI can really take you out of the experience. You really need that extra 10% conviction when looking at something to really absorb the anxiety and fear of a particular image. Your lizard brain has to believe, so to speak.
Hellraiser filmmakers brought that extra 10 in credibility and did a great job of mixing hands-on footage and CG. Every creepy and gory moment made me nervous and, being a horror fan myself, I’m thrilled to see where the franchise will go from here. Especially if that level of attention will be devoted to visual effects in the future.
