Ibrahim Maalouf is back. After two albums of covers in which he revised his work and Christmas standards, the Franco-Lebanese trumpeter is preparing to release, on November 4, an album titled capacity to love.
A first extract, presented on August 25, Money, in collaboration with the American rapper Erick the Architect (co-founder of Flatbush Zombies), sets the tone for this album that mixes oriental music with hip-hop and RnB accents.
foray into rap
This first foray into American rap is “about the relationship with money and the control we think we can have over others when we have it,” explains Ibrahim Maalouf in the press kit.
“I really wanted to make a song about this topic. The idea was to imagine people as pawns, controlled and under control, like in the movie. Matrix. Erik immediately loved the concept.
“I wrote our song Money from the point of view of a person who believes that he can control everything, a bit like those people who have a lot of money, emphasizes Erick the Architect. My favorite part of the track is when my flow changes at the end and turns into chaos. I wanted to write a song like that, because of everything it represents. Pulling too hard on the rope can even backfire on you.”
For this album, Ibrahim Maalouf had Erick the Architect, therefore, but also Gregory Porter, Sharon Stone, De La Soul, the singer -M-, JP Cooper, Cimafunk, D Smoke, winner of Rhythm + Flow, the Netflix Rap Contest…
This album is Ibrahim Maalouf’s 17th, revealed in particular by titles like Beirut in 2011, true sorry in 2014, or red and black lightin 2015.
