Steve Albini, producer of Nirvana and the Pixies, dies at 61

Steve Albini died on Tuesday, May 7, of a heart attack. In particular, he produced Nirvana’s last album, “In Utero”, and the Pixies’ first album, “Surfer Rosa”.

It will have influenced the sound of an entire section of independent rock. Musician and producer Steve Albini died after suffering a heart attack on Tuesday, May 7, his recording studio Electric Audio announced, cited by Pitchfork.

Although he dropped the term “producer,” preferring to be credited as “recorded by Steve Albini,” the Pasadena, California, native was involved in the creation of some iconic albums such as in the womb, Nirvana’s third and final album. Released in 1993, it notably included the titles “Heart-Shaped Box”, “All Apologies”, “Rape Me” and “Dumb”.

Steve Albini also helmed the Pixies’ first album, pink surfer, in which we find the famous “Where is my mind?” On their X account, the group paid tribute to the producer by publishing a photograph accompanied by these simple words: “RIP Steve Albini.”

The list of artists Steve Albini has collaborated with also includes PJ Harvey, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard. French groups, such as Dionysos, have also had the opportunity to hire the producer’s services.

“I want music to survive us all”

According to his own count, Steve Albini has worked on more than 2,000 albums, most of them signed by groups little known to the general public. He himself was a figure in the Chicago punk scene in the 1970s and ’80s, and received no royalties for the records he worked on, Pitchfork notes.
