Four new short films from the animation studio Ghibli will be screened on the Croisette, which will receive the honorary Palme d’Or on Monday, May 20 in Cannes, including a mini-sequel to the classic. My neighbor Totorothe Festival organizers announced this Saturday, May 18.
“In an unprecedented event, three of the four short films, coming directly from the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, have never been seen outside of Japan,” the Festival specifies in a press release.
All of these short films were written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of the studio with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata, and a living legend of Japanese animation.
Among them, Mei and the kittenbuspresented as “a minisequel” to My neighbor Totoro, looking for a house, Mr. Dough and the Egg Princess AND Boro the little caterpillar.
Hayao Miyazaki absent
Considered a master in his field, two-time Oscar winner Hayao Miyazaki opened dream worlds of magical creatures and strong-hearted heroines to children and adults alike.
The 83-year-old filmmaker will not be in Cannes on Monday: his son, Goro Miyazaki, will represent him and will come to collect the Palme awarded to the entire studio.
Inside My neighbor Totoro, two sisters settle with their father in the countryside in a house where strange things happen. When they fall to the bottom of a hole in the forest, they meet Totoro, a huge stuffed animal, a kind of forest spirit, who has become the mascot of Studio Ghibli, who helps them conquer their fears.
The reference to Alice in Wonderland is evident in this learning story where both children and adults use their imaginations to navigate the fear and wonder of the unknown.
