“The price is not that high”: Rima Abdul-Malak defends the price of cinema tickets

The Minister of Culture resumed the defense of cinema prices in the columns of the Parisian. According to her, “the State cannot interfere in its pricing policy.”

The Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul-Malak, defends this Wednesday in the columns of the Parisian the price of cinema tickets, often accused of being too high, and of deterring the public from going to dark rooms.

“In reality, the price of tickets in France is not that high, with an average of 7 euros if we take into account reduced rates, youth rates, family rates, etc.”, insists the minister, before specifying that many movie theaters “have a very advantageous pricing policy.” “In Germany, it’s almost 9 euros,” she recalls.

As Rima Abdul-Malak reminds us, although the price of seats in cinemas is “an issue”, “the State cannot interfere in its price policy”. For now, her goal “is to reach young people to build the audiences of tomorrow.”

“That is why we are investing very heavily in this age group, in particular through the Culture Pass and its two components, the individual part – already 2.4 million young people enrolled – and the collective part, at university and at school. secondary, with an amount of 25 euros per student for school outings.

“We have to adapt to the crisis we are experiencing”

The price of movie tickets is one of the challenges of the current crisis in cinemas. Last September, Kad Merad revived the debate by stating on RMC: “[Une] movie tickets, it ain’t cheap […] When we go with the family, when we have two ice creams, three sweets, expensive evenings are made…”

According to the humorist, it is necessary to rethink prices in cinemas: “[Le renouveau] will necessarily go through an economic effort”.

“Lower prices? Maybe! A fixed price like books? Maybe! We have to adapt to the crisis we are experiencing. We should not wait!”

The National Cinema Center and the National Federation of French Cinemas, associated with the Ministry of Culture, launched a promotional campaign on Wednesday to boost admissions. This should last for a month and increase attendance after a difficult month of September for exhibitors.
