While most of DC’s major superhero characters, from Superman to Wonder Woman to Aquaman, have made their way into the modern generation of DC films, one character, Green Lantern, has been conspicuously absent. Instead of getting a movie, the plan was to introduce the modern Green Lantern incarnation via the HBO Max streaming series, and while that’s still the plan, the show has undergone a major overhaul, until the version of Green Lantern in the show.
There have been several Green Lantern characters in DC Comics over the years, the best known being Hal Jordan, the version played by Ryan Reynolds in the previous big-screen attempt, and John Stewart, an African American Lantern. the Justice League animated series in the early 2000s. It came as a surprise when it was announced that the HBO Max series would focus on two other Lanterns, Alan Scott and Guy Gardner. However, the show is now undergoing renovations and THR says John Stewart will now be the centerpiece of the series.
The decision to renew the series is now at least somewhat surprising since former showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith had apparently completed eight scripts for the series, enough for the entire first season, in previous terms.
The exact reason for the decision to renew the series is not explained beyond the fact that the decision was made following the recent departure of Walter Hamada from Warner Bros. He had previously overseen all DC studio projects. It was recently announced that James Gunn and Peter Safarin would take over as co-CEOs of DC Studios, but they won’t officially start that job until November 1, so it wasn’t their call.
Whatever the reason, Green Lantern fans will likely embrace this change for the simple reason that John Stewart is a generally more popular character than previously planned versions of Green Lantern.
While Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine, who previously played Gardner and Scott, are no longer tied to the project, sources told THR that Berlanti Productions hopes to work with them again when this remake of the series goes into production. . We may still see those Green Lanterns, but they won’t be the main characters on the show.
While the The Green Lantern was initially accelerated, it looks like this new production release will take some time to get to HBO Max. And while the new bosses at DC Studios apparently had no influence on that decision, once they start their new job next week, there’s always a chance they can shake things up even more. .
