A new record for Star Wars. A rare figure of the bounty hunter Boba Fett, of which there are more than two copies in the world, was sold at auction for $525,000, that is, more than 480,000 euros.
This hand-painted figure is now the most expensive toy in the world, ahead of a Barbie doll with a 1-carat diamond, which sold at auction in 2010 for $302,000 or 277,000 euros.
This toy, which was never marketed for safety reasons, breaks the toy record Star Wars the most expensive, in the hands of another Boba Fett figure sold for $236,000 (217,000 euros) in 2022.
“We knew this toy had the potential to be in the record books and it was very exciting to see it become the most expensive toy in the world,” said Joe Maddalena, one of the auction directors at Heritage Auctions.
Choking hazard
This Boba Fett action figure was designed in 1979 by the Kenner toy company in anticipation of the release of The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, where the famous bounty hunter made a memorable appearance.
The toy, which contains a rocket launcher, would be given free to children who already had four other figures. Star Wars. But the project was canceled when a similar toy but inspired by Battlestar Galactica presented a danger of suffocation.
About a hundred prototypes of this figure were created, but only two were hand-painted. The sold copy was saved by an employee after being discarded. Curious destination for the most expensive toy in the world.
