In the years leading up to the launch of black adam Dwayne Johnson explained how the balance of power in the DC Universe will change. It turns out he was right, but not necessarily about everything that happened on the big screen (which remains to be seen). Next week black adam in theaters, we have seen a major shift in the management of DC’s film production, with the announcement that James Gunn and Peter Safran will be co-directors of Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios division. Fans, as you can imagine, have a lot of thoughts on this.
The duo previously worked together at Gunn’s suicide squad film and also Safran produced Shazam! and the water man movie. Gunn came to work on the DC project after it seemed his Marvel days of him were over, but now he’s in charge of DC. Gunn himself, known for telling fans not to pay too much attention to rumors, made sure to confirm the news was true.
Exactly. Very happy to be here. #DC pic.twitter.com/KpvdME4PjuOctober 25, 2022
DC cinema fans, James Gunn, or just movies in general, has a lot to say on the subject. For the most part, people seem to be very positive about the decision. Safran has a proven track record as a manufacturer in general, but particularly in the DC sphere. And people who know James Gunn and his love of comic book material are excited to see what this couple can do.
Congratulations Jacques. Good for you and very good for movies. 🤘🏻👁🤘🏻October 25, 2022
Gunn and Safran will essentially fill the DC Films role that Kevin Feige has at Marvel Studios, and it’s been said more than once over the years that having someone with a strong vision like Feige is a big part of why Marvel has. was successful while DC’s big-screen experiments dwindled as often as they increased. But given that Gunn also has a strong relationship with Marvel and has expressed interest in a Marvel / DC crossover, at least one fan dreams big for the future.
Kevin Feige said “never say never” to a Marvel and DC crossover. Now James Gunn is the president of DC Studios 🤔 Will we ever see The Avengers with The Justice League? 🤯 pic.twitter.com/ST2APt8gxbOctober 25, 2022
There’s certainly a contingent of DC viewers who aren’t as thrilled with James Gunn and Peter Safran’s casting, those who keep hoping DC will come back to Zack Snyder and his Snyderverse. Henry Cavill’s recent return as Superman was seen as a positive step in that direction, but many see the move as a clear indication that WBD won’t embrace the Snyderverse. However, not all fans of Snyder’s DC movies are that pessimistic.
While I’m not a fan of James Gunn’s humor, I don’t expect him to force it on other directors / writers working on DC projects and it’s important to remember that he maintains a good relationship with Zack and enjoys his work.October 26, 2022
It’s undoubtedly a big step forward for James Gunn, who started his career working for Troma, has directed films for Marvel and DC, and will now direct the series for DC. He’s also the guy who wrote some live-action Scooby-Doo movies for Warner Bros., which makes your mind wander …
Dear @JamesGunn, now that you have incredible influence … what are the odds of getting a live action version of THIS? pic.twitter.com/4BC0uFZks6October 26, 2022
Of course, it’s too early to guess how DC Studios will change in the future under new management. There will almost certainly be changes, but no one really knows what they will be and it will take at least two years for them to really take shape. There will be those who like their neighbors and those who don’t, but it’s unlikely anyone will say that things haven’t gotten very interesting.
