Ghosts boss explains Hetty’s “small steps” in the Halloween episode, plus Liam Neeson and Pickle Guy’s joke

Spoilers ahead for episode 5 of ghosts Season 2, titled “Halloween 2: Ghost of Hetty’s Past”.

ghosts celebrated the spooky season in a way that only this CBS sitcom can do: with a session that brought back Hetty’s nemesis , a near-death experience for Sam in Woodstone’s secret crypt, Liam Neeson’s exclusive Halloween party, and a storyline essential pickle. Co-showrunner Joe Wiseman spoke to Gossipify about the episode and shed some light on what the ending means to Hetty … and how exactly Liam Neeson’s name came about.

“Halloween 2: Hetty’s Ghost from the Past” started innocently enough, with Jay telling June and Ally that he and Sam were having their party, so it didn’t matter that they weren’t invited to the secret Halloween party. by Hetty. Liam. Neeson in his country house. Unfortunately, the two said they’d stop in Woodstone before going to Liam Neeson’s, and the last-minute guest list consisted mostly of Sam and Jay, June and Ally, the ghosts, and Randy, the pickle. caught Jay at the market.

A session to enliven the festivities later, and the living accidentally conjured the spirit of the former maid who had been having an affair with Hetty’s husband, and Hetty was No happy to be reunited with Molly … especially in light of the fact that Molly won death while still trapped in Woodstone. With no time to find a way to send Molly back to where she came from, the two ghosts have reconciled and how Elias really was the culprit.

Forgiving Molly was a big deal for Hetty, and she even told the former servant that Elias had been sent to hell, which they were both very happy about. When co-showrunner Joe Wiseman spoke to Gossipify about the episode, he wondered if it would change permanently after the ordeal:

These are always baby steps. These characters are what they are and we don’t want to completely change them, but we want them to grow. [and] learning lessons So I think it’s a small step forward. It’s hard for Hetty to forgive, and I think part of that is realizing it wasn’t necessarily Molly’s fault. Both were products of their time, and both were a kind of Elijah’s victims. So I think rather than growing up, it’s more of an understanding that Hetty goes through in this episode.

Sitcoms aren’t known for serialization that changes characters in major ways, but Hetty got something big in the Halloween episode that won’t necessarily go away. It’s also a sign of how far Hetty has come since she’s alive. Of course, she still made some comments about the Irish and she may have wanted Molly join the ghosts of cholera in the basement if she stayed, but she no longer despises feminism as before! And her adventure of her with the washing machine earlier this season showed that she is much more open-minded in 2022 than she was in the 19th century.

Of course, she could have gotten stuck with Molly (and possibly Sam’s ghost too if she wasn’t rescued from the vault in time) if Jay hadn’t found a way to get his ex-wife back from the room. This involved recovering an antique duvet she had given June as part of her Halloween costume, which meant ruining Liam Neeson’s party. Even though the actor didn’t appear, his secret Halloween party became a recurring gag of the episode, and when I asked Joe Wiseman why Taken star was the chosen celebrity, shared:

I don’t know if I have an answer to this! It was one of the first names introduced and it sounded like, “Sure, why not?” Many celebrities have homes in this neighborhood. I don’t know if that’s the case or not, but it seemed credible enough. And then it seemed funny when we found the link that the pickle would know where it lives because it’s a great pickle. There is no rhyme or reason. It seemed to fit.

Liam Neeson was therefore not cast due to his ghostly experience in the role of a force the ghost Obi-Wan Kenobi , and it wasn’t the only recurring joke of the episode. Pickle Guy, aka Randy, looked like he was just there to joke about all the pickle stuff, but he turned out to be the key to saving the day as the guy who usually delivers all of Liam Neeson’s pickles. Randy was one of the highlights of the episode for me and Wiseman agreed:

One of my favorite moments is when the pickle realizes that one of the pickles in Liam Neeson’s house isn’t his, and that’s the betrayal. He says, “That’s how I learned.”

From Randy’s reaction, the sting of betrayal hurts even more when it comes to pickles. However, he got his new best friend and they couldn’t have sent Molly back to the afterlife without him. In fact, the fact that the pickle is so central to the Halloween story is such a twist that even Joe Wiseman had to comment on it:

Darrin Baker plays Randy, the pickle who looks like a weird local boy they meet at the farmers market. And the [gets] heads to the party Jay and Sam are throwing and then becomes part of the plot. He is the only one who knows where Liam Neeson’s house is when they have to go to Liam Neeson to retrieve the duster that was present at the session. I can’t believe I’m saying these sentences.

Sometimes a Halloween incident is as simple as failing to carve a pumpkin and sometimes accidentally lending a neighbor an important duvet before he goes to a movie star’s secret Halloween party. In the ghosts cinematic universe, however. Randy the pickle saved the day and left me with so many questions. What’s the craziest thing you’ve marinated? Why did he go roller-skating at the Halloween party? Why is Jay already his best friend? It’s a good thing for Jay, after his other friends turn out to be members of a cult and I still can’t see the spirits ?

“Halloween 2: Hetty’s Ghost from the Past” didn’t have all the answers for Randy, so I made sure to ask the co-showrunner if he and his pickles could make a comeback. Joe Wiseman replied:

It’s a good idea. I wish, I wish. We’re still writing the Season 4 finale, so I’d love to see it again. Yes, it was fun.

Only time will tell how much (or not) this story will affect Hetty in the future and whether we see Randy the Pickle again, but keep tuning in to CBS Thursday at 8:30 pm. ghosts (opens in a new tab). The episode aired on November 3 seems to be important for the Trevor forever without pants .
