Don’t Worry Darling wins 5 minutes of applause at the Venice Film Festival, but the first reviews are more mixed

Even though the summer movie season is officially over, there is still a lot of movie content to look forward to this year. This includes the film directed by Olivia Wilde don’t worry honey, a psychological thriller set in the 1950s, coming later this month. A few days later Cate Blanchett Tar impressed at the Venice Film Festival, don’t worry honey It has now been screened at the event, and although it received a five-minute standing ovation, critics have screened this film in a more mixed light.

The Venice Film Festival served as don’t worry honeyworld premiere, and as reported by Terme, the audience cheered for five minutes after the end, with Olivia Wilde joined by stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine and Gemma Chan. Obviously a lot of people in the crowd liked what they saw of Wilde’s smart booking The Surveillance and Deadline notice describes this “kind of cross between salt, The women of Stepford Yes baby rosemaryas “fun, but familiar”.

[On] Don’t Worry Darling on its terms is actually pretty funny if you’re in the mood, even if Wilde’s candy-coated psychological thriller doesn’t significantly rewrite the rules of the genre.

Variety described don’t worry honeywhich released its first trailer in May as a perfectly satisfying, if not great, film that offers a “big twist,” and especially praised Florence Pugh and Harry Styles for their performances.

Between pop ambition, tasty dream imagery and the presence of Harry Styles in his first starring role, “Don’t Worry Darling” should have no problem finding its audience. But the film takes you on a journey that becomes less and less bright as it progresses.

At the more negative end of the critical spectrum, we have THR who called don’t worry honey the “nth stepford wives imitation “which is technically well done and has impressive performance, but falls short of its” inevitable Big Reveal “.

The high-level and unsatisfying psychological thriller marks an ambitious improvement over Wilde’s reach of Booksmart’s character-based coming-of-age comedy, and she handles the physical aspects of the project with confidence. It’s a shame that all the effort went into a storyline without much of the disarming freshness of early 2019.

Finally, USA Today (opens in a new tab) classified don’t worry honey 2.5 stars out of 5, noting that Olivia Wilde’s second collaboration with writer Katie Silberman doesn’t have the same “spark” as smart booking and also to say that there is a lack of chemistry between Florence Pugh and Harry Styles in the film. That said, the publication admitted, among some other highlights, that Pugh still is don’t worry honey “observable”.

Wilde’s next film imagines an idyllic community (at least for the 1950s crowd) where there is something sinister under the outside of the shirt. And while there is a sort of definite vibe to “The Stepford Wives”, the narrative themes (which tend to time) lack subtlety and nuance.

don’t worry honeyThe debut in Venice comes a few days after the announcement that Florence Pugh would no longer advertise the film. Officially, this is attributed to the fact that she was in the middle of a firefight. Dune: second part, where she plays Princess Irulan, but Pugh is also rumored to have a bad relationship with Olivia Wilde. Regardless, the initial critical reception indicates this don’t worry honey It won’t be a treat for audiences, but there will be more reviews in the coming weeks (including from 24 News Bulletin) to provide other perspectives and potentially change the film to be received more positively or negatively overall.

if you want to judge don’t worry honey For You, opens in theaters on September 23rd. Check out our 2022 release schedule to see what other films are slated for the rest of the year.
