Of what we know Enola Holmes 2 , the young detective finally gets a case, when a girl asks for help to find her missing sister. The trailer suggests it will be allies with Sherlock for some people good brother jokes , as their cases are linked. Let’s see what the critics say, to begin with 24 News Bulletin’s review of Enola Holmes 2 . Eric Eisenberg gives the film 4 out of 5 stars, stating that the sequel surpasses the original, with a more complex story and well-established twists:
Enola Holmes 2 is a film with a lot on its shoulders, yet it bears the weight of it. It’s a fun, romantic, dramatic, exciting and clever sequel that the whole family can enjoy and shows immense potential for future chapters.
Molly Freeman of ScreenRant agrees that the second offering in the book-to-film adaptation tells a more coherent story than the first, and the film is a comfortable, low-stakes mystery with great performances overall. The critic says:
All in all, Enola Holmes 2 offers a sequel that will appeal to fans of the first film, while providing an easy entry point for anyone who hasn’t seen the 2020 Netflix movie. Those who enjoyed Cavill’s Sherlock in Enola Holmes will be particularly happy to see him more involved in the story of the sequel, but it’s still the Brown franchise. It has become a powerhouse and continues to harness its skills and charm to keep this film series engaging, and viewers will be amazed by the well-constructed mystery and fascinating dynamic between the two Holmes brothers.
by Paul Bradshaw NME gives the movie 3 out of 5 stars, saying the new adventure isn’t as exciting as the first, but there’s still a lot of fun to enjoy:
Millie Bobby Brown leads another fun crime flick that feels like a solid second chapter for the YA series, albeit a little confused by the kids’ problems.
Andrea Webster of the edge says that with the origin story supported in the first film, Enola Holmes 2 is free to jump straight into the fun, with a surprisingly complex mystery:
These are all welcome developments, as Enola Holmes firmly establishes itself as one of the few successful family action franchises currently. It has the main things you expect from this type of movie: the stars! explosions! Jokes! Romance! Sword Fights! – and establishes its own distinctive flavor without straying too far from its genre lines.
However, not all reviews are as sold on the sequel as Lovia Gyarkye’s. THR note that the film tries too much to juggle. However, Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill have great on-screen dynamics as brothers. From Review:
This additional responsibility rests on the film, which struggles to manage its excess baggage. Enola is not only worried about Sarah’s disappearance; she too navigates the growing feelings for Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) and tries to escape the shadow and condescending interventions of her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill). Sherlock, who became Enola’s legal guardian at the end of the first film, now has to balance her job with his brotherly duties. While Enola Holmes 2 is all about the perspective of our determined heroine, she occasionally takes on Sherlock’s point of view, changes that awkwardly fork the film’s focus and create too much detail.
Kate Erbland of IndieWire also find Enola Holmes 2 disappointing, awarding him a C + for his bloated storyline and seemingly forgetting what made the charming young detective in the first place special:
A big part of the joy of this franchise, which caters to younger viewers but has so much to offer viewers of all ages, is the energy Brown brings to the character. It’s the same kind of energy [director Harry Bradbeer] excels at bringing to the screen when he’s not distracted from smoothing out the many details of Jack Thorne’s script. … Something is brewing and intelligent watchers know it and still hope to be spellbound. Too often, Enola Holmes 2 forgets how to do it.
If this sounds like a mystery you want to dive into, you don’t have to wait long. Enola Holmes 2 will be available to stream on Netflix starting Friday, November 4th.
