Top Gun: The Maverick director explains that Navy pilot Tom Cruise said he would never do it again

Top Gun: Maverick It was the most successful film of the 2022 cinema calendar until now, while attracting tons of spectators to the cinema to witness the spectacle of high-flying aircraft and death-defying action. While Cruise is known for most of his stunts, and does them, there was a scene in Dissident where a Navy pilot flew the runway for him. When they finished filming, the pilot said he didn’t want to do it again.

Joseph Kosinski explained Empire that the most extreme scene they shot in the film was Maverick’s rapid flight across the mountains during training. The pilots have to cross a low and winding road very quickly. To prove it’s possible, Maverick ends up blowing up the course. It was agreed from the start that these flights would be convenient and everything on the screen was coming from “Practical aeronautics means flying in front of a target”, as Plane Coordinator Kevin LaRosa Jr. said. So, for this scene, real Navy pilot Frank “Waleye” Weisser flew the route with Cruise in the back seat. He explained the technical difficulty of the sequence, saying:

It was the most extreme thing we filmed, just in practical terms of what you actually see on screen. It’s all filmed, it’s Tom Cruise at 550 knots, passing 30 feet above ground through the Toiyabe. [Canyon] low-level training camps. It’s a real Top Gun workout, but they never fly that low. After I landed, Walleye walked up to me and said, “Do you understand?” I said, ‘Yeah, I think we did it.’ He said, “Well, because I’ll never do that again.”

In other words, they flew low and fast, and in a way that has never been done in true Navy training. It is therefore logical that the driver does not want to start over, it seems that it was a huge and dangerous challenge both physically and mentally. Meanwhile, Kosinski explained that Cruise was having the best time of his life, saying:

I would have done it 100 times more! I’m actually smiling because when I watch this video he makes a face, but I know that under the mask he smiles most of the time, because he is having the best time of his life.

Cruise is firmly committed to the art of great action movies. In the Mission Impossible movies, hanging out of a taking off plane, jumping from roof to roof and more, raising the level every time. It is therefore logical that in the long awaited time best gun Sequel Cruise had a lot of fun creating these amazing scenes.

as long as there is cinematic moments that defy the laws of physics Much of it was practical. Many stars talked about training and shooting scenes on the air. Danny Ramírez explained the madman they went filming in the air, saying they had to wear a lot of hats, from acting to helping get the cameras on the plane to work. Furthermore, with Cruise leads the cast, the bar was high for everyone when it came to training and filming amazing action.

Although dangerous, the result of these scenes was incredible. They really did an incredible feat with this film, and it’s amazing that the action was so intense that even a Navy pilot wouldn’t want to steal some footage anymore.
