Live Saturday night has a rich history of bringing musicians to do double duty on the show, which means they are both musical guests and episode hosts. The List of hosts for season 48 has already included two, with Megan Thee Stallion on October 15, and now with insanely popular rapper Jack Harlow tonight, and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Although Harlow has already appeared once as a musical guest on the classic comedy show, this will be the first time she has come to give her welcome monologue. Of course, I was a little confused by this choice. I know Jack Harlow as a rapper in his early twenties, known for his big hits like “First Class” and “WHATS POPPIN”. I’ve never seen him do anything else. However, the commercials they released for the show convinced me and now I can’t wait to see what the rapper has in store. Look:
I was pleasantly surprised by this little preview. Since this will be the Halloween episode, Kenan Thompson and Marcello Hernandez joke about Harlow’s white haircut, asking him if he’s dressed as “sexy yeti”, “pimp on a cruise ship”, “almost historically exact Jesus” and still more, before the rapper says it’s just her dress. He then he gets in the elevator and says “Meryl Streep, of course”. And I can’t explain exactly why, but I legitimately laughed once the elevator doors closed.
In a second announcement, they announced the return of Cecily Strong, who didn’t show up in the first few episodes, and Harlow once again showed her comedic timing as she awkwardly held his hand. So, between these two announcements, I have become quite optimistic about Harlow’s possibility of joining the short list of musicians who will also be hosting the concert at SNL.
He clearly has the comedic timing to succeed on the show, and it seems like he’s willing to compromise, which is so important to making successful sketches. I’m excited to see what they do to us in this episode, and who knows, this might turn out to be one of the best episodes of the season.
Now I know it’s a big statement. However, in the past, dual feature episodes have proven to be some of the best hosts in any given season. Musicians can usually transfer their stage presence to comedy and their involvement is phenomenal. On occasion Season 47 Presenters who voiced as musical guests included Billie Eilish and Lizzo, who killed him. There’s a rich history of hosting double duty, and Harlow will join the ranks of iconic stars like Paul Simon and Justin Timberlake, as well as modern classics like Harry Styles, Donald Glover, and Chance the Rapper.
With SNL the 24-year-old rapper takes the biggest leap in the game, as he was launched in the new version of whites can’t jump , in the role made famous by Woody Harrelson. Between this hosting gig and the upcoming remake, it’s thrilling to see the musician step out of his comfort zone.
