The timeline of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was relatively simple. With a few notable exceptions, such as captain america the first avenger, captain wonderYes guardians of the galaxy vol. of them – most of the films feature events that take place in the year in which the film in question was released (eg. The ant man was in theaters in 2015 and is set in 2015).
But then the shot happened. In ending of the Avengersthe MCU took a surprising leap into the future with a five-year time jump, which means that all of the Phase 4 movies and shows (not counting Black Widow) take place in the not too distant future. Not only did this make it a little harder for fans to keep up with everything in the ever-expanding sequel, but it also created some confusion behind the scenes at Marvel Studios.
I interviewed producer Nate Moore last weekend at Los Angeles press day for Black Panther: Wakanda foreverand one of the topics of discussion was the Marvel timeline. I asked him directly if it is more complicated to keep track of things in the franchise because events take place in 2023 and beyond, the director replied bluntly. Moore said,
Yes. Yes. Of course, the snap between Infinity War and Endgame and that five year span is a bit of a headache at times like “Wait, how old is this character now? Wait, how long has it been? Who is it? really been crushed, who hasn’t broken, and some of these timeline elements can get a little sticky.
Sometimes it’s easy to determine where a Phase 4 project is on the timeline. Vision of Wanda, for example, specifically notes that the action takes place three weeks after the 2023 battle against Thanos and his army. With Spider-Man: Away from home set during the summer vacation after the snap, we know it must take place within a year of the aforementioned battle (aka 2024), and is mentioned in Spider-Man: No homecoming that Halloween has just passed, setting its action in November of that same year.
However, the other Marvel Studios projects aren’t that specific. show how knight of the moon Yes She-Hulk: lawyerfor example, the dates are not very clear, either Thor: love thunder. Obviously, the Marvel Studios filmmakers are trying to maintain a tight continuity, but things are understandably more complicated now that the franchise can’t use the pre-add-on model to track everything.
Next, Nate Moore highlighted the efforts made, adding that circumstances have led Marvel directors to reflect on how future events will align with what they plan:
We try to respect that as much as possible, but surely, you know, sometimes we say “Oh yeah, this movie is technically set in 2028, so who … are there elections this year?” For example, this stuff is fun and frustrating.
Fans will soon have a chance to return to the complicated continuity, like Black Panther: Wakanda forever It will be in theaters around the world on November 11th.
