South Africa will strip its nationality from its former beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina, who became Miss Nigeria after a controversy over her origins in the country where she grew up, the South African Ministry of the Interior learned.
“The services will proceed to withdraw the identity documents,” a ministry official, Tommy Makhode, told a parliamentary committee, explaining that he had “not received a response” from Chidimma Adetshina or her mother.
The latter, of Mozambican origin, was the subject of an investigation for identity theft at the request of the organizers of the Miss South Africa contest, reports the New York Post. Chidimma Adetshina, a finalist of this competition, finally retired in August.
Violent controversy
This 23-year-old law student born in Soweto had given up after the revelation of the investigation and several petitions demanding her exclusion in this country where outbreaks of violence against foreigners regularly arise.
Finally elected Miss Nigeria, Chidimma Adetshina must participate on November 16 in the Miss Universe contest under the colors of her father’s country of origin, where she will compete with the young woman elected Miss South Africa after her retirement, Mia the Redhead.
For weeks, political figures, celebrities and simple Internet users have been multiplying comments about their citizenship in South Africa.
