In 2020, Daniel Radcliffe had been the first actor in the franchise. Harry Potter to condemn comments deemed transphobic by JK Rowling. The one who played the famous magician in the eight films explains, in a new interview, why he separated himself from the author of the books at the origin of the film saga.
“It fails that I say that I chose it seems that (…) after I finished Harry Potter, I found a three great names of young queers and trans who strongly identify with Potter,” he declared. -Have IndieWire.
“That day, seeing them injured, I wanted to let them know that not everyone in the franchise shares (JK Rowling’s) ideas. It was very important,” she adds.
In June 2020, the British author had streamed on twitter an article referring to “people who menstruate”, becoming upset that the term “women” was not used. Many netizens then criticized him for excluding transgender men, who may continue to menstruate despite their transition.
A few days later, in a long message posted on her blog, she insisted on advancing several arguments related to transphobic rhetoric, in particular that of denying trans women access to the women’s bathroom.
“I couldn’t have looked at myself in the mirror”
Immediately, Daniel Radcliffe published an open letter on the website of The Trevor Project, an association for the fight against the suicide of young members of the LGBT community, with whom the actor has collaborated for more than ten years: “Transgender women they are women”. He had written. “Any statement to the contrary erases the identities and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice from professional medical associations, who are much more qualified on the subject than Jo or I.”
“I don’t think I would have been able to look at myself in the mirror if I hadn’t said anything,” he explains today. “But it’s not for me to guess what’s going on in someone else’s head.”
The vast majority of the Harry Potter cast condemned the comments by JK Rowling, who has become a controversial figure. When the HBO Max platform organized a show last year to bring together all the actors in the saga, the author decided not to participate.
Since the last installment of the franchise, released in 2011, Daniel Radcliffe has continued his career as an actor. After starring opposite Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum in the hit comedy The secret of the lost cityreleased last April, will soon appear on Weird: The Al Yankovic Storya biographical film about American singer and comedian Al Yankovic.
