“Do we have to do a reset?” Ryan Murphy wants to revisit ‘Glee’

The producer regrets certain aspects of his successful series and wishes to offer a new version.

A social phenomenon that has become one of the most criticized series in recent years, Happiness could be entitled to a reset. This is suggested by its creator Ryan Murphy, who said on the microphone of the And That’s What You Really Missed podcast:

“It’s been a long time. I wonder if we should look at this story again. Do we have to do a reboot? Do a musical on Broadway?”

“I love the message of the show and what we’ve accomplished with it. There will be nothing else like it.” Happiness in my life. It is a very personal job. Nothing can come close to it,” continues the producer.

Series abandoned by its creator

Issued between 2009 and 2015, Happiness chronicles the misadventures of a high school choir in Ohio. The series, acclaimed for its progressiveness at the time, featured LGBTQIA and disabled actors and characters.

His success had been immense. The series had won the Golden Globes for best comedy series in the middle of its first season, then the cast had been invited by Barack Obama to a White House concert.

But quickly the hearings had begun to drop. Ryan Murphy was left uninspired, especially since he had launched himself at the same time American horror story. Then he began to abandon his creation to develop other projects.

Ryan Murphy’s Regrets

The producer now regrets not ending the series sooner. According to him, the death in 2013 of Cory Monteith, who played one of the main characters, should have marked the end of the series:

“It’s impossible to come back after an event like this,” he explains. “It wasn’t a normal disease-related death where you see the person [décliner]. It happened so fast, with no warning signs.”

Cory Monteith, who had suffered from a drug addiction since adolescence, died shortly after season 4 of an overdose of alcohol and drugs, at the age of 31. Ryan Murphy then decided to add the actor’s death to the series.

Since 2015, Happiness hit the headlines. One of its stars, Mark Salling, committed suicide in 2018 after being arrested for possessing images of child pornography. Many articles also talked about a toxic filming atmosphere. A documentary tracing this story is in the works.
