The film was set with Ryan Coogler returning to write and direct, and Chadwick Boseman returning in the title role. In 2020, Boseman passed away, and while everyone mourned the death of the beloved actor, they also had to change directions with the film. Now, Coogler is opening up about her latest conversation with the actor.
The director was recently on the Marvel podcast. Wakanda Forever: The Official Black Panther Podcast where he discussed the making of the sequel and reflected on their relationship and Boseman’s death. She also revealed the last thing she talked about with Boseman, and she was dealing with Black Panther: Wakanda foreverHe said:
I just finished [the script]. My last conversation with him was to call him and ask him if he would like to read it before receiving his study notes. That was the last time we spoke to each other. He died maybe a few weeks after I finished.
That conversation was about the 2018 film sequel, and Coogler had offered to let Boseman read the script. The actor turned it down because he didn’t want to interfere with the studio notes, but the director later found out he turned down the script because he was too tired to read it.
Coogler also explained how sudden Boseman’s death was. The actor died four years after he was diagnosed with colon cancer. No one but his family knew he had cancer. The director said the actor had been suffering from this disease for as long as he knew him.
The black Panther there was the sequel be “rooted in T’Challa’s perspective,” according to Coogler. This means that when Boseman died, the direction of the film had to change. From the trailers alone, however, it’s clear that the actor’s and character’s legacy is honored and is an important part of the film.
Another challenge the creatives faced was deciding whether to reprise T’Challa in the sequel, which the producer explained that it wasn’t an easy decision . I guess it was particularly difficult as a script had already been written. Although the decision not to refund was made a long time ago, the discussion continues. Although T’Challa has not been recast, we know that one character will take on the role of Black Panther in wakanda forever.
