While anyone with a Netflix membership can now keep up to date with what’s happening to Daniel LaRusso and most of his former opponents today, there is one key character that the Netflix series won’t introduce for new adventures. Mr. Miyagi cannot appear in new scenes of cobra-kai, but could a prequel series happen? Gossipify asked actor Ralph Macchio to talk about it and he came up with some ideas.
I had the opportunity to speak with Ralph Macchio about the launch of his latest book, Grow Up: The Karate Kid and me (opens in a new tab), where he talks at length about his friendship with Mr. Miyagi’s actor Pat Morita. As such, I asked him about the idea of a prequel after Mr. Miyagi, and if that’s something he’d like to see made, I should cobra-kai give rise to repercussions:
I would like [see that]. What is the story of young Miyagi? What was this teenager and man in his twenties who went into World War II and lost his wife and child? It’s all part of the original Karate Kid movie. What guided this guy through the little bits of history we learned from him in The Karate Kid Part Two in Okinawa? What led this man to be a janitor in a small condominium in Reseda? [It’s] kind of a mirror of what Johnny Lawrence started in the first season of Cobra Kai. Everything is ripe for it. However I would like to see it.
Ralph Macchio has established an interesting connection between Johnny Lawrence and Mr. Miyagi that should be the tone of this series. Mr. Miyagi is known and celebrated as Daniel LaRusso’s mentor, but there is a part of his story that the films touch that remains unexplored in cobra-kai. Many fans remember the funny teachings of the sensei, but perhaps less think of the man who rebuilt his life after his wife died in childbirth in a Japanese internment camp.
There is certainly a story to be told when it comes to Mr. Miyagi, but it remains to be seen if anyone will have a chance to tell it. Ralph Macchio shared with Gossipify what he knows about the current chances of a series happening and what Pat Morita (who had to audition more to land his now iconic role) would think:
There have been talks but nothing official, but I’d love to see him and I know Pat (Morita) has always wanted to delve into how Miyagi became the man we knew.
A Mr. Miyagi prequel wouldn’t exactly expand the material added to the franchise via cobra-kai, but for the Miyagiverse it would be a new path to grow further. In the meantime, it appears the franchise is in good shape, albeit season 6’s cobra-kai remains to be confirmed.
It’s also worth noting that while a Mr. Miyagi prequel sounds like a great idea to pursue for Netflix, there are other characters from The child of karate that fans haven’t seen yet. Hilary Swank is still waiting for your call to join the party, even though Ralph Macchio hinted at Gossipify that the cobra-kai The team would not hesitate to communicate if an opportunity arises in the future. We’ll have to wait and see if this, as well as a Miyagi prequel, catches on in the coming months.
