Well, series actors Danielle Fishel, Rider Strong, and Will Friedle have started their own rewatch podcast for the series. Pod meets the world it started in June 2022 and the premise of the show is quite simple. The three co-hosts watch episodes from their long-running 90s sitcom as they share memories of their time on set, as well as never-before-seen anecdotes behind the scenes. The group talks about their experiences on the show and, during one episode in particular, Strong explained why he thinks Cory and Topanga’s sexual history is “incredibly irresponsible”.
In a recent episode of the podcast Rider Strong, famous for playing the show’s villain Shawn Hunter, recalled one episode in particular that made him very uncomfortable and upset with adults on set. The episode in question is the 22nd of season 5, entitled “Promises, promises”. The episode is one of three that Disney has banned from airing in content-based syndication. The story focuses on the fact that Danielle Fishel’s character, Topanga, and Ben Savage’s character, Cory, will have sex for the first time. Strong revealed that his dissatisfaction with the show was mainly due to his reluctance to talk about safe sex. The child knows the world alum says:
I remember I didn’t really like the prom episode while we were shooting it. I remember being very upset all week. I was very angry with the adults on our set, the way they approached this, especially since we weren’t talking about safer sex. The fact that we didn’t mention Cory and Topanga using condoms or arguing over birth control and yet the whole episode was about whether they “will” or “they won’t”.
The star went on to say he was so upset by the script that he raised his concerns with the show’s creator and executive producer, Michael Jacobs. The actor explained that after presenting his case, the producer did not give the kind of response he expected. Rider Strong continued:
I just remember being so upset and talking about it. I remember talking with [series creator] miguel [Jacobs] about it, saying, “Can we talk about it? Maybe your generation doesn’t understand that, but we grew up in the age of AIDS, it’s something we need to talk about. When you talk about losing your virginity, you’re talking about how you’re going to do it and how protect you from it. And it left me completely speechless and told me it was a ridiculous thing to worry about and that we didn’t even need to discuss it. And in that moment I felt it was incredibly irresponsible.
Danielle Fishel echoed her co-star’s awkward memories. Even though she can’t remember a specific incident, she remembers feeling uncomfortable for “similar reasons”. Actor Shawn Hunter went on to explain how a few episodes later, during a note session, the apparent hypocrisy of the creator bothered him even more:
And then I remember that, like three episodes later, we were shooting an episode where we joked about sharing razors, where Cory and Topanga were talking about sharing razors in college. And I remember, in a note session, Michael Jacobs saying, “You know, I recently read that hepatitis can be transmitted by razors. Are we irresponsible? And I just remember being so angry. I was like, ‘Oh, now we’ll talk about hepatitis. ‘ But for some reason the idea of talking about safe sex was out of the question, even though the whole episode was about sex.
Although former cast members and podcast hosts were open about the difficulties they faced working on the sitcom, that didn’t stop them from praising the show for the topics covered, nor from maintaining a relationship with the show and your Creator. Will Friedle recently talked about “the incredible” It’s the TGIF series that still resonates with fans. Friedle, Fishel and Rider Strong are back for the sequel series. the girl meets the world. Even if the sequel show was canceled by Disney Channel after its third season it was popular with viewers, and the cast seemed to have had a lot of fun reuniting with the previous cast and crew.
Although Disney has banned the airing of episodes such as “Prom-ises, Prom-ises” on television, they have been restored in the correct order. Contemporary audiences can watch these episodes and form their own opinions on what has been managed and what has not been managed sufficiently.
