Hong Kong: five arrests after an accident in the middle of a concert of a famous boy band

Last July, a giant screen collapsed on stage during the show of the singing group Mirror, injuring several dancers.

Hong Kong police arrested five people on Friday on suspicion of tampering and negligence after a stage accident that could lead to lifelong paralysis of one of the city’s most famous boy band dancers, a report confirmed. police source.

During a July 28 concert by the boy band Mirror, a giant 500kg LED screen suspended above the stage fell on members of the cantopop (Cantonese pop) band Mirror, hitting one of them in the neck and knocking him down. in critical condition.

Five people were arrested on Friday on suspicion of tampering and accused of dropping the screen, a police source told AFP.

The five defendants worked for main production contractor Impact Engineering and subcontractor Hip Hing Loong Stage Engineering Company, local media reported.

Security standards survey

Horrific footage of the accident, captured by horrified fans, shocked Hong Kong, highlighting failings in enforcing safety standards and sparking a wider discussion about working conditions in the entertainment industry.

In August, a government-commissioned investigation concluded that the cables used were of poor quality and that the weight of the display it supported had been underestimated, without naming those responsible at the time.

Dancer Mo Li, who had just turned 28, suffered a serious spinal injury and remained in critical condition for more than a month. Doctors believe her chances of a full recovery from her are slim. A second dancer was injured more lightly.

Last month, concert organizers Music Nation and MakerVille defended their choice of production team and rejected accusations of cutting corners.

Hong Kong generally has good safety standards, but a series of fatal workplace accidents has recently raised concerns that there are insufficient measures to protect workers and punish employers when preventable accidents occur.
