The new movie release my father’s dragon is a Netflix Original that tells the story of a boy, a perilous journey, and the dragon that binds them both. Jacob Tremblay provides the voice of Elmer Elevator, the young man at the center of it all, which is very different from previous projects which have seen him cross emotional timbre. One of the more memorable parts of this has to be Tremblay’s traumatic appearance in medical sleep and the actor had special memories of how he prepared for such a gruesome scene.
In conversation with Jacob Tremblay and director Nora Twomey during Netflix (opens in a new tab)print day for my father’s dragonthe theme of Bedroom the former career of the actor has emerged. So, of course, when discussing heavier roles that nursed Tremblay to take on the animated adventure, the legacy sequel from writer/director Mike Flanagan the splendor had to go up.
After asking how his 12-year-old self might prepare for such a moment, Jacob Tremblay told Gossipify about his process on Doctor Sleep. The response was as methodical as you’d think, because here’s what he had to say:
As strange as it sounds, it comes from my heart. I don’t know if you know, we shot this scene on my birthday. It was funny because they brought me a whole red velvet cake. I think something like that, and something about my game is that since I was little, when I went to school, everyone was playing sports, playing hockey. I never really connected with that, for me it was just about the movies. And the way I loved to play as a kid was to pretend I was a different character and get a lightsaber. Obviously pretending to be a Jedi is completely different from being kidnapped and killed, but part of that is I guess I know how to do it, teaching myself how to put my mind into someone else’s mind, if that makes any sense.
It’s amazing what a child’s imagination can do for an actor trying to get into the right frame of mind. Nowhere is this more true than Jacob Tremblay’s Horrible Birthday Party , in which the True Knot cult brutalizes his character, “baseball guy” Bradley Trevor. Directed by Rebecca Ferguson’s Rose the Hat, it’s a protracted scene of blood, screams and steam – the life force these pseudo-vampires feed on to stay young.
Before we go any further, you really need to watch this scene, because it cannot be understated that Tremblay gave such a raw performance that it scared everyone on set. If you don’t mind putting an imaginary child in danger and want to get a real sense of what Jacob Tremblay did with the big scene of him in medical sleephere is that clip:
While some might argue that pretending to be a Jedi, especially a young Padawan, is the right experience for this scene, it’s another brilliant performance from Jacob Tremblay that showcases his acting skills. Facing this kind of darkness at a young age, Tremblay found he was ready for roles like my father’s dragon that embrace childhood adventure with a more serious twist.
However, the young man realized how important it was to get rid of his horrible fate once the catch was in the box. While explaining his day on set, Jacob Tremblay explained how using the skills that helped him fake a cruel and unjust death also helped him figure out when it was time to say goodbye to his father and brighten the mood.
Which I could learn to do at that tender age. Even for a role like that, I close my eyes and really imagine the environment. It was very real to me. I did the scene, and as soon as it was over, I obviously didn’t want to dwell on those emotions for too long, because maybe that would start to scare me a little. As soon as they yelled cut, I stood up and cheered my dad, because he was there and we had cake. Shooting the whole scene, oddly enough, was a fun experience.
One can imagine the career Jacob Tremblay has ahead of him, especially when dealing with really dark stuff. As he admitted, honing his skills at these things only makes it much easier to play lighter, but still bittersweet animated roles.
You can feel the results of such an approach when you watch my father’s dragonwhich is currently streaming for those who have a Netflix subscription . Meanwhile, if you want to see medical sleep always to recommend you can stream the theatrical cut with an HBO Max subscription.
