The French actress with the International Aura Juliette Binoche paid tribute to the Palestinian photojournalist Fatima Hassauna, killed by an Israeli bombing in Gaza in mid -April, which opens this Tuesday, May 13, the 78th Cannes Festival of which he presides over the jury.
“Fatma should have been with us tonight. Art remains. He is the powerful testimony of our lives, our dreams,” said the star in a speech in which he also mentioned the “hostages of October 7 and all hostages, prisoners, drowned who suffer terror and die in a terrible feeling of abandonment.”

In a column published on Tuesday, almost 400 personalities of world cinema, including Pedro Almodovar or Richard Gere, called to break “the” face “of the” face “in the genocide” in Gaza, welcoming the memory of Fatima Hassauna, protagonist of a documentary programmed in Cannes in a parallel section.
“War, misery, climate change, primary misogyny, the demons of our barbarians do not leave us respite,” said Juliette Binoche.
“Against the immensity of this storm, we must give birth to sweetness, transform our visions, fragment, find, heal, heal our ignorance and let our fears go, our selfishness, change the course,” he added before the world cinema planet, including Robert de Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Cannes Film Festival will end on May 24 after having granted Palma’s gold to one of the 22 films in competition.
