“Hurry tomorrow”: Abel Tesfaye’s experimental film to say goodbye to The Weeknd

After several years of success, the artist Abel Tesfaye says goodbye to his alter ego the week in a conceptual thriller, in the cinemas this Friday, May 16, inspired by his last homonymous album.

Before saying goodbye to his Weeknd character, Abel Tesfaye pays a last tribute to the cinema. The artist, who had repeatedly known that he intended to leave his alter-ego musical behind him, presented this film this Friday, May, his film Hurry tomorrowthat accompanies the album of the same title released last January.

In this introspective and experimental psychological thriller, directed by Trey Edward Shults, the Weeknd officially draws a line on his character. Halfway between fiction and reality, it embodies a musician “plagued with insomnia caused by one of his fans in an odyssey that will lead him to question the foundations of his existence”, we can read in the synopsis.

“I had to live this cathartic moment”

This interrogation was imposed on the Weeknd after a voice extinction during a concert in Los Angeles in 2022. This incident, represented in the film, caused in the artist what he describes as a nervous depression, as well as a long path of reflection to understand what could have happened to him.

“In general, something is happening and inspires something in me. There, I told myself that it was time to close two chapters of my life,” says Abel Tesfaye in the columns of GQ magazine.

“I had to live this cathartic moment when I try to understand what is happening in my head, with this movie, answer all these questions and try to close the chapter of this personality that I tried to erase a while. I had the opportunity to burn this character in a 35 mm movie and see that,” adds the artist.

On the casting side, Abel Tesfaye gives the answer to Jenna Ortega, particularly seen in the Netflix series, Wednesday. She performs an obsessive fan that will try to enter The Weeknd’s life. The artist also shares the screen with Irish actor Barry Keoghan (Salt shaker), who plays one of his friends.

This is not the first time that the Weeknd tries in movies. The artist, who caused a sensation during the Grammy Awards On February 2, he started on the screen on the movie Unbuilding gems By Josh and Benny Safdie, in 2019.

In 2023, the singer also produced her first series, The idolIn collaboration Sam Levinson, to whom we owe the series Euphoria. The Weeknd plays the role of Tedros, a rather bleak owner of nightclubs who is trying to discover new talents and notably gives the answer to Lily-Rose DeppJennie of the K-Pop Blackpink group, Da’vine Joy Randolph and Rachel Sennott.
