“500 million tickets less”: the frequency of cinemas worldwide fell in 2024

Last year, 4.8 billion film tickets were sold worldwide, or 500 million less compared to 2023.

The number of tickets sold in cinemas around the world fell 8.8% in 2024 compared to 2023, the first from the COVID, presented the European Audiovisual Observatory (OAS) at a conference in the Cannes Cinematographic Market this Friday, May 16.

“In 2024, a total of 4.8 billion film tickets were sold worldwide, generating estimated revenues at 28 billion euros,” said Martin Kanzler, from OUE.

“There are 500 million less tickets compared to 2023,” he said.

Since 2020, a dark year for cinemas due to health restrictions, the assistance of dark rooms had only increased in the world. “Maybe we have reached a new set,” said Martin Kanzler.

The cinemas frequency reaches 68% of that of 2019, last year before the pandemic, against more than 70% in 2023.

China breaks its tickets sold

In this little dynamic environment, Europe resists better than other regions of the world. The film assistance rate reaches 75% of that of 2019 and the fall in the number of tickets sold was only 1.7% in 2024.

On the contrary in China, the world’s largest market with 21% of market share, the fall in assistance reached 22%.

In Europe, two countries are distinguished by their density of dark rooms per capita and an average high assistance rate: France and Ireland.

With respect to productions, “the vast majority of them, 81% to be precise, are linked to the films produced in three countries,” namely, the United States, China and India, stressed to Manuel Fioroni, an OAS analyst.

Unlike Chinese and Indian productions, they are sold almost exclusively in their national markets, American films are exported and “cross easily thanks to their distribution network but also to their international audience.”

European productions remain late

In Europe, 63% of the spectators saw an American film in 2024. But European productions are nibbling their delay and registered 33% of the market share. “It is the best result for four years, and even ten years if except the year of pandemic in 2020,” said Manuel Fioroni.

Of the 20 greatest success of the box office in Europe, 18 films are Americans. Vice versa 2, I, ugly and unpleasant 4 AND Deadpool and Wolverine occupy the podium.

The two European productions of Top 20 are French with A small extra thing AND The mount-Christ count.
