Ten years after Marie Trintignant’s death, six years after her release from prison, Bertrand Cantat had returned to light when she returned to her profession: Singer. Not with your group. The noir desire of what was the leader and singer dissolved in 2010. A final compilation of the popular group was launched in 2011 under the name of “Let’s be Casual, let’s look like nothing.”
Bertrand Cantat had chosen another artistic path by throwing another group, in this case within a duo called Detroit. It is with bassist Bertrand Humbert that returns to music. He published “Horizons” on November 18, 2013, in Barclay in the universal Major Music France, the historical seal of “Noir des'”, as his many faithful, appointed the historical group.
A tour in 2014
Pascal Nègre, who participated in the group’s flight and led at the time when the elder had decided to give the artist a new opportunity, the right to reintegration. The album will not be a success or a failure with 150,000 copies sold. A score far from the great hours of their former group that 890,000 people still listen to Spotify every month.
Cantat is surrounded by musicians and goes on tour in 2014. Bourges printemps welcomes, for example, Detroit, which then occurs in several rooms everywhere in France. The concerts that, every time, if they did not adapt to anger and misunderstanding, were the source of repeated controversies.
Ten years later, mentalities have evolved. #Metoo has been there. Detroit no longer has a record company and, therefore, asks Crowdfunding to launch his second album. The amount requested for this project was 60. More than 217,000 euros in total. The Ulule platform that publishes this call for donations is strongly criticized. The album “L’Angle” was launched last December in general indifference. But Cantat is not completely boycotted: every month 17,000 people still listen to Detroit in Spotify.
A solo album that will be a flop
In the delivery period, Bertrand Cantat also published a solo album: “Love Fati”, in 2017. A real failure with less than 40,000 sales but several controversies! Cantat had spoken for the first time in the magazine “Les unrockable.” The cover where the singer’s face appeared had reacted at that time.
The tension had not fallen at the time of the tour that had followed and that had not been able to reach its end in 2018. The album was launched in the Weinstein media in the United States and a progressive consciousness in France of the questions related to Metoo had allowed feminist associations to be heard.
In 2020, Bertrand Cantat released another album with another Paz group (with novelist Caryl Ferey). Again, the project goes unnoticed. In 2019, even before the launch, the tour had been canceled!
A “symbol” and fierce defenders
“What is terrible with Bertrand Cantat today is that some see it in it a symbol of violence against women. Of course, it has no excuse for what it did, it is unfortunate. But it was condemned and had its problems. We are wrong,” said Caryl Ferey.
Despite the controversies, several artists continued to arrive at Bertrand Cantat: the Eiffel Group, the Shaka Ponk group, Brigitte Fontaine, Wajdi Mouawad entrusted him with the creation of the music of his “mother” in 2021.
Bertrand Cantat – 61 years – now lives between Bordeaux and Les Landes. He did not announce any tour after the launch of his last album, 7 months ago. He never speaks and has no social networks.
