The secrets of the tubes – 7/12. Every summer weekend, Philippe Dufreigne makes you discover all the small design secrets of the surprising songs of our musical heritage. Today, the story of an artist who did not like jazz. And who, however, made him the subject of his most popular title … is Michel Jonasz who tells “The Jazz Box”.

Sound The jazz box So associated with the musical genre that you might think that Michel Jonasz was a fan. Error, his thing for him “was blues, it was rock’n’roll, it was Henri Lepreux’s golf-douot, at all jazz,” he entrusts the artist to BFMTV.

“For me, jazz was music from specialists, intellectuals, things like that. It wasn’t my field, I,” he adds.

But in music as in other places, you must believe in yourself. Then, Michel Jonasz, a young musician in process, decides to respond one day to an announcement for the recruitment of a pianist.

“He was not a real pianist. I heard about an audition. It was in Saint-Germain-de-De-Prés, in a winery. It was a jazz orchestra and they were looking for a pianist. I told myself that I was going.

“And I play, but anything. So, very kindly, they told me: ‘No, it’s not right,” he continues.

“People discouraged me at the beginning of my career”

But with what relationship The jazz box? Michel Jonasz will maliciously imagine that he has won this audience and has turned it into a song. The title becomes the greatest commercial success of the singer: 7 weeks in the top 50, song of the year in the first victories of music … a success, which did not surprise the artist.

“What is success? I wasn’t looking to be recognized, besides that is what happened. People discouraged me at the beginning of my career, but well. And I told myself that they didn’t know. They barely surprised me since I had scheduled for that,” he specifies the artist.

Michel Jonasz does not enjoy singing the jazz box on stage. But the public awaits him impatiently. Sometimes too much. “I remember one in particular who asked ‘The Jazz Box’ of the second song. ‘The jazz box!’ Third song, fourth song.
