Guerra in Gaza: Pedro Almodovar asks the Spanish government to “break” his links with Israel

In response to the current war in Gaza, the filmmaker urged the Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez to end any diplomatic and commercial relationship with Israel.

In a video posted on Instagram, director Pedro Almodovar called on Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez “breaks” his diplomatic and commercial relations with Israel, in relation to the current conflict in Gaza, which describes as “genocide.”

“I ask our government to break any diplomatic, commercial and other relationship with the state of Israel as a protest against the genocide he commits against Gaza’s people in the eyes of the entire world,” he said.

Open letter to Cannes

This is not the first time that Pedro Almodovar talks about the current war in Gaza. During the Cannes Film Festival last May, the Spanish filmmaker had significantly signed an open letter with many other personalities, to denounce the “silence” in the “genocide” in Gaza.

Since the beginning of the war in October 2023, the Spanish socialist government of Pedro Sánchez has been one of the most virulent detractors of the European Union with the military campaign directed by Israel in Gaza.

Spain significantly recognized, in May 2024, the existence of the Palestinian State and qualified last June, the situation in Gaza as “genocide.”
