A meeting between two musical universes. Apple TV+ presents this Friday KPOPPedA new unprecedented musical competition produced by Lionel Richie and Meghan Thee Stallion.
The concept is as follows: two old glories of Western music collaborate with K-Pop stars (South Korea) and J-Pop (Japan) to visit their greatest successes.
In a few days of essays, the two teams imagine choreographies, staging posts and then present themselves live in front of a Seoul audience, responsible for appointing the best of the two performances.
A meeting between two worlds
If the competition format is quite classic already throughout, the force of Kpoped He is in his guests. Presented by the Megan Thee Stallion rapper and the South Korea Psy Singer, the program stands out to artists such as the Spice Girls (Mel B and Emma Bunton), Vanilla Ice, Kesha, TLC, Boy George, J Balvin, Kylie Minogue or Boyz II.
To accompany them, several K-Pop groups among the most prominent: Itzy, Billlie, Ateez, Stayc, Kep1er, Kiss of Life or Blackswan. This generational and cultural mixture offers surprising perfomizages, but also (occasionally) some moments of grace, such as collaboration between Kesha and Jo1 in Happinessor that of Kylie Minogue and Ateez in I can’t get you out of my head.
Beyond the show, KPOPPed It also reveals the contrasts between the rigor millimeter of Korean idols and the focus of Western artists, sometimes in difficulty maintaining rhythm.
At the end of each episode, the public designates a winner, but the winners do not leave with any prize. No trophy, without a price, not even a simple collaborative: only a public ovation.
As a result, the program has everything of a great luxury karaoke, where competition seems above all a pretext to prove compatibility between two musical industries. We finished the series a bit disappointed, but the show, maintained its promises.
