His cast of Dark Materials examines the vastly different priorities of his characters in the final season.

its dark materials will return for the third and final season, after the end of the second season cliffhangers for all main characters . With Will and Lyra separated after their father’s death and kidnapped from their mother, Mrs. Coulter on the run with her sleeping daughter, and Asriel poised to start a war with the Authority, the stage is set for a dramatic finale to The Story. Luckily, with so much at stake, stars Dafne Keen, Amir Wilson, James McAvoy and Ruth Wilson spoke to Gossipify about their characters’ priorities…and those priorities are certainly not all created equal.

Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson play Lyra and Will, and their characters split at the end of season two after spending seven episodes developing their bond. When asked about Lyra and Will in Season 3, both immediately agreed that their characters’ priorities would be “for each other.” The first look at the third season revealed that they will meet and the trailer proved that there are adventures in store for them before the end.

However, Will and Lyra have other priorities, as stated by Amir Wilson:

Will obviously has his father’s dying wish, which is to bring the Subtle Knife to Asriel, and I guess that’s been on his mind throughout the show.

Will’s whole life changed in the few minutes he spent with his father after their reunion and before the death of John Parry (who was different from Philip Pullman’s book ), and was tasked with bringing the knife to Asriel to destroy the Authority. For her part, Lyra also has second priority in light of the final post-credits sequence of season 2, as shared by Dafne Keen:

I think Lyra is thinking about Will and Roger. Those are the two priorities you have right now.

Considering Roger passed away at the end of season 1, helping him certainly poses a major challenge for Lyra…and not necessarily one that matches what Will wants to do to honor his father’s dying wish. Especially since Lyra may not be willing to do anything to help Asriel, in light of what she did to Roger!

As for Asriel, James McAvoy spoke about her character’s number one priority at the start of season 3, and it’s definitely not a face-to-face meeting to make amends with his daughter. However, he definitely fits in with the big speech he gave about recruiting the Angels for multi-world war at the end of last season. The computer science chapter 2 actor She said:

Multiversal domination is number one, and complete submission of everyone around me, I would say, is number two. [laughs]

Let’s not say that Asriel doesn’t aim high for himself! Like the human who managed to open a door to another world. without the thin knife or any special power and then recruited a celestial helper, perhaps the Authority should take it seriously. Either way, fans can expect to see more of Asriel from Season 1 after hers the standalone episode was to be cut from season two .

What about Mrs Coulter? She once had grander ambitions that could almost rival those of her former lover, but according to Ruth Wilson, her focus changed for season three. The actress said of her character priorities:

I think mine is purely time to keep control of [Lyra]. I keep losing her and she keeps running away from me. Now that I have it, don’t give up. But actually, I think this is the first time Miss Coulter doesn’t have a grand plan. In fact, it’s a bit lost in the plans. So she just says “go away, she find a secluded place and hope for the best”. But she knows the inevitable will overwhelm her. I think there’s a certain innocence to her in the beginning like, ‘maybe I can spend that little time with her, and I want to keep it as long as possible.’

Lyra fled nearly every encounter with Ms. Coulter once she got away in Season 1, so none of the big plans to keep her at work. Will finding a secluded spot work, after keeping Lyra away from Will and her witches? Her daughter has a knack for getting away from it all and a friend who makes that a priority, so it probably won’t be easy. Ruth Wilson confirmed that Ms. Coulter isn’t exactly focused on the multiversal domain like Asriel:

I think he has given up on the idea of domination. It’s kind of like, maybe she’s just dominating the guy, you know, just keeping control of that. It’s hard enough for her. Sounds like a pretty big challenge.

Lyra, Will, Asriel and Mrs. Coulter appear to be the main cast of its dark materials‘ third and final season, and only Will and Lyra seem to be on the same page with at least one of their priorities to begin with. As for who emerges victorious and whose priorities may need to change… well, fans will just have to tune in and find out!
