Usually when a big player like that goes away, you tend to see him wishing you well for his future endeavours, but in this case it’s almost like a party. People are thrilled that Iger is back and Chapek is gone, including the head of AMC theaters.
Adam Aron, CEO of the largest movie theater chain in the United States, took it Chirping literally screaming from the top of the mountain about the level of respect he had for Disney’s new CEO. Based on box office receipts, Disney is the largest film producer of any movie studio. Bob Iger returns to lead Disney because its CEO is a big deal. Let me shout it from the top of the mountain. I have the utmost respect for Bob Iger.
Perhaps it’s not so surprising that the head of a huge movie theater chain is happy to see Bob Iger again. It has been under CEO Bob Chapek that we’ve seen a narrowing of the theatrical window for Disney releases, as well as daily and date releases on Disney+ as Premiere Access titles. While these are pandemic-era decisions made by most other studios as well, Iger certainly doesn’t have those decisions tied to him.
Bob Chapek also rolled out a major retooling on the media side of the business that was designed to place more emphasis on streaming, and it’s already clear that Bob Iger is planning to change that, as he was reportedly unhappy with much of it. what Chapek did. as managing director. . Kareem Daniel, the head of Disney’s Media and Entertainment division, the new vertical created by Chapek, has already been fired and it’s clear that Iger plans to return to the old structure or something closer. Aron’s tweet came before all of this happened, but he’s probably even happier now.
As Aron said, Disney is a box office champion, and while things haven’t quite returned to pre-pandemic norms, Disney hasn’t handled the global box office with Chapek the way they have with Iger. A successful Disney theater environment is good news for all cinemas.
We may have only seen the beginning of what is about to change at The Walt Disney Company under his new leadership, but many people, both mere fans and big business partners, have a very positive view of where things can go from here. . .
