The Marvel Cinematic Universe recently expanded with the release of Ryan Coogler’s film. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The acclaimed blockbuster was one of the most anticipated hosts upcoming Marvel movies ahead of its release, and has been making a ton of cash at the box office in recent weeks. The sequel is a meditation on grief, with a touching real-world connection to the death of Chadwick Boseman. And Marvel’s Letitia Wright spoke about the emotional exchange she had with a black Panther co-star after learning of Boseman’s death.
Chadwick Boseman is dead in the summer of 2020, after a private battle with colon cancer. This shocked fans and her colleagues alike, who have been open about the grieving process that accompanied the process of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Letitia Wright plays Shuri in the franchise and recently opened up The Guardian exactly how you learned of Boseman’s death. In his words,
I was at home in my flat in East London. I was alone. I woke up and saw an email with my condolences, and I said, “My condolences for what?” Then I got out of that email and kept seeing Chadwick Boseman, Chadwick Boseman, Chadwick Boseman. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I clicked on one and it was the PR team saying, “Want to write a statement? ” Statement? What’s going on?
No doubt that feeling of confusion can be echoed by countless Chadwick Boseman colleagues and fans, who were unaware of his health issues. While Letitia Wright had a close relationship with her on-screen brother, she was shocked when people started sending their condolences regarding her death. It’s a sobering account of that very real feeling when tragedy strikes and you can’t understand it.
Later in that same interview, Letitia Wright revealed a black Panther actor who was there for her in her pain and confusion. Namely, Daniel Kaluuya, who was sadly absent from the rest of the film . As she shared:
And I went to my phone and saw 50 consecutive calls from different people. I was like, this is crazy. So I called Chad and his phone was ringing. So I called Daniel Kaluuya and said, ‘Brother, what’s going on?’ And he was silent. And I was like, ‘Bro, do you have five seconds to tell me that’s not true? It’s awful. What is happening ? And there was this dead silence, and I was like, ‘I think that’s true, but I’m just asking you to tell me it’s not.’ And I didn’t. His response was, ‘Tish, where are you, who are you with?’ And I was like, ‘Okay, you’re not giving me the answer I need, I’ll call Chad back.’ Daniel said, “Tish, what are you doing?” I said I was trying to call Chad, and he said ‘Tish, family…’ And in the second he said I was lost. He was hitting my apartment, he was screaming. I was so angry. I was like, ‘Brother, Daniel, that’s not going to happen’, but his silence speaks volumes. And he immediately came from where he was to console me.
What a moving story. Letitia Wright’s honest recollection of the aftermath of Chadwick Boseman’s death shows how much the cast and crew of black Panther I really understood that by bringing Wakanda to life. And those emotions apparently translated into powerful performances from Wright and Angela Bassett in the critically acclaimed sequel.

These things make you realize how important it is to reach the people you love. The number of times I text my actors to tell them I love them, especially Danai. [Gurira]. Still writing to Ryan. [Coogler, the director of the Black Panther films] that I love him, and asking him how he is. I won’t delay any longer because tomorrow is not promised. Ever since Chad died, I’ve been so afraid of losing people.
Grief is a delicate beast and Letitia Wright is very brave and generous in offering such an intimate look at how Chadwick Boseman mourned. And it seems that in addition to finding a way to move forward professionally and personally, the loss of her has changed the way she views her relationships with other co-stars like Okoye actress Dani Gurira .
