After crowning Youssef Swatt in 2024, new school returns to the service this Friday, October 31 on Netflix. For this fourth season, the objective is the same: to try to unearth the future talent of the rap scene, who will win 100,000 euros.
But for this new edition, the format of the competition changes slightly. This is how the trio of juries that tour France ends: this time, two great rap figures, SCH and SDM, face off in a unique “versus” format.
An impressive level
In the first two episodes we find the usual auditions. Supported by their guests – Vald and Theodora from SCH and Ronisia and Naza from SDM – the two juries watch several candidates parade, each on their own side, whom they must convince, during a freestyle, to hope to secure a place for the rest of the competition.
Very quickly the teams took shape. Where some previous seasons of new school could suffer from an uneven level, the 2025 vintage impresses with its quality and diversity.
Some names immediately stand out like 2L, a 22-year-old rapper from the 20th arrondissement of Paris. This young artist, described by her SDM coach as a “little diamond in the rough”, impresses with her maturity and technique. On the SCH side, Shayne, 25, from Gonesse intrigues with a proposal as unique as it is confusing.
Among the candidates, some have already started in the rap scene. Shadow artists, experienced but still seeking recognition. One of them, Angie, confesses that she has already opened for several big names in music: Tiakola, Yseult, Kalash Criminel… while TRZ, candidate for the SCH team, reveals that he has 15 years of experience in rap.
Previously known under the name LMK, Eve La Marka, in the team SCH, shone for a long time in R’n’B and dancehall before devoting herself to rap. In 2021, she was even among the finalists to represent France at Eurovision before losing to Barbara Pravi.
Two new tests
In the third episode, these promising profiles meet in Paris to compete in a unique test: face to face. This is where competition really comes into play.
In previous seasons, candidates took turns performing on stage before being judged by the jury. But this time a representative from each team competes against another with the same song and it is the guests, Rim’K and Oli, who decide. The winner of the duel gives his team a point while the team with the fewest points at the end of the event must lose two of its members.
Also new this season is the encryption test, subject to public voting. Each team meets in the studio to record a freestyle with a beatmaker: Dany Synthé for SDM and Geo on the track for SCH. Then the two songs are uploaded to Spotify and the group with the most votes wins the round while the losing team must once again say goodbye to two of its members.
For the first time since the launch of new schoolListeners therefore have a role to play in influencing the outcome of this new season. Last March, the two titles were published anonymously on Spotify and submitted to a public vote, which had to decide.
At the end of this test, only 10 candidates (5 per team) are selected for the next stage of the competition: the battles. A continuation that already promises to be tough given the level of the SCH and SDM teams. The next three episodes will be available on Netflix starting November 7. To find out the name of the person who will win the 100,000 euros, you will have to be patient: the final will not be published online on the platform until November 14.
