The series box. Wednesday Could it be at the origin of a clothing trend? As this show centered on the eldest daughter of the Addams family breaks viewership records on Netflix, we are witnessing a sudden popularity of the gothic style on TikTok. Countless netizens are adopting the look of the famous character – black hair in braids, dark makeup, black clothing, and an expressionless face – in videos that have racked up millions of views.
One trend in particular stands out: many young women recreate a delirious choreography of the character played by actress Jenna Ortega in one of the episodes. In an accelerated version of bloody mary of Lady Gaga, recreate her movements at the slightest gesture and sometimes manage to look like her to get confused.
“You go after outcasts in real life”
At first glance innocent enough, this renewed interest in a slightly gothic aesthetic is making purists cringe. As seen by the site konbinimany would-be followers of the gothic imagination feel overwhelmed by the appearance of this fashion, when they themselves have often had to be criticized for their taste in clothing.
“You all look up to Wednesday while you persecute the outcasts in real life”, thus teases a TikTok user while recreating the same dance.
“Going to say ‘Wednesday is too fancy, it’s too me’ when a few months ago you were harassing real adults for their style, you hypocrites,” wrote another.
Created by Alfred Cough and Miles Millar and produced in part by Tim Burton, Wednesday features the eponymous character as he tries to adjust to his new school, Nevermore Academy, by solving a series of crimes. Jenna Ortega gives the answer to Gwendoline Christie (game of Thrones), Christina Ricci and Catherine Zeta-Jones. And it is that this eight-episode program has just marked the history of Netflix by getting the best start in the history of the platform for a series in English. It logged 341.2 million hours of viewing worldwide in its first week of broadcast, breaking the record of 335 hours held by season 4 of Strange things.
