in the world of upcoming movie, the lineup of originals and continuing franchises in the Netflix stable appears to be moving forward. Netflix’s Original Movies slate for 2022 was quite aggressive and managed to generate massive blockbusters. That hasn’t stopped creatives like actor/director/producer Ben Affleck from calling the studio/broadcaster an “assembly line” as they discuss how his and Matt Damon’s businesses will differentiate themselves from the rest of the market.
During his appearance at the New York Times DealBook Summit this week, Ben Affleck (via Term ) seemed to challenge Netflix’s habits of releasing a large amount of content in any given year. Setting out something of a mission statement for what his new studio Artists Equity will do differently, here’s how Ben Affleck reflected on the mega-streamer model:
If you ask Reed Hastings… I’m sure there are risks to that, and I’m sure they had a great strategy, but I would have said, ‘How are we going to make 50 great movies? How is it possible? There is no committee big enough. There’s not enough, you can’t do it. It is something that requires attention, dedication and hard work and endures the assembly line process. Scott Stuber is a very talented and intelligent guy who I really like… but it’s an impossible job.
the star was a sample of the Netflix movie experience while doing triple edge, and his comments don’t exactly betray his previously expressed faith. Rather, it seems to be a criticism of the pace of production the studio is going through. With a major film and TV release scheduled each week, the quality control that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon seek to exercise with Artists Equity would not be possible.
Expanding on that point during this Q&A session, the Oscar winner took his understanding of the streamer’s business practices one step further. Emphasizing the focus on quality over quantity, the veteran actor offered the following words as further proof that he means business when he competes with the studio he gave us. potential franchise drivers the gray man , red alertYes Extraction:
There’s a bigger audience for action movies than for smaller dramas, I get that. Some genres play more widely, and you can’t help but be aware of that. But let’s make it good, surprise the audience, get them interested.
The seriousness of Bot Ben Affleck and Matt Damon when it comes to making movies is beyond doubt. After all, it’s the duo that we cried together doing Hunting for goodwill how successful it was. As this film’s lasting impression on cinematic history remains true to this day, Artists Equity seems to have these kinds of experiences and projects in mind as it moves forward. It’s not that Affleck completely disagrees with Netflix’s business model, but it does seem like he’s trying to play more in the “show” half of the “show.”
For now, Ben Affleck fans can watch his latest performance as part of the uploaded cameo. employees III, which is now available to rent or purchase in both physical and digital formats.
