Nearly 20 years after Love Actually, Hugh Grant still hates that dance scene, but admits it made a ‘cool’ addition

love indeed has become a holiday viewing tradition for many and comes as one of best romantic comedies of all time thanks to its choral cast, several interconnected stories , and an eternally quotable dialogue. However, there is one scene that arguably lives more infamy than any other, and that is when David, the prime minister, celebrates his verbal attack on the US president with an impromptu dance party. Ultimately, Hugh Grant hated that scene, a fact that comes as the beloved film he directed to celebrate his 20th anniversary. However, the actor will take credit for a “cool” addition to the number.

Hugh Grant was one of many love indeed actors who have spoken to Diane Sawyer for Laughter and love secrets in reality: 20 years later . The actor’s bad temper has been well documented by writer-director Richard Curtis, co-star Emma Thompson, and even Grant himself, especially when it comes to this dance. Grant told Sawyer:

I think I saw that in the script and thought, “Well, I’m going to hate doing that.” No Englishman can dance when he’s sober at 8 in the morning. …And I miss the rhythm, by the way, especially in the beginning when I shake my ass. The last part, right at the end, when I do [points and turns], my lips are out of sync with the song. But I will give myself that credit. It was my idea that the secretary caught me. Genius.

Hugh Grant had 20 years to reflect on the Pointer Sisters’ popular ‘Jump’ dance number, which he turned into a character after publicly dismantling The President of the United States by Billy Bob Thornton . It’s obvious from the way Grant can immediately point out the flaws of the scene that he’s been thinking about it for the past two decades. There’s at least one part of the scene you can be proud of, and you absolutely should, because the prime minister caught in the middle of celebrating him is such a classic moment.

That doesn’t warm up her overall feelings about it, as she said on the ABC special:

And to this day, you know, there are a lot of people, and I agree with them, who think this is the most horrific scene ever shot on celluloid. But then some people like it.

Richard Curtis seemed to know people would like it, and despite Hugh Grant’s initial refusal to do the scene, the director stood his ground and ultimately abused the actor. Curtis recalled:

He kept saying no. I think she expected me to get sick or something, and she was like, ‘Oh, too bad, we’re going to have to miss that dance sequence.’ … Oh, I was grumpy. I was grumpy. But I knew it was a contractual obligation. Certain contractual obligations acting.

Longtime fans of the film would probably say the director was worth fighting for, but Richard Curtis admitted he thought it was “extremely embarrassing” when he watched Hugh Grant film the dance number.

love indeed It doesn’t appear to be losing popularity anytime soon, and unfortunately for Hugh Grant, this dance could stick with him for another two decades.
