Post-slapstick safety isn’t the only big Oscars change for 2023

Will Smith slapping Chris Rock has dominated the narrative surrounding the Oscars over the past year, people may have overlooked the controversy hanging over the ceremony before the big night. This issue was with the Academy decision not to televise eight categories . Now, after last year’s backlash, they’ve announced that all 23 categories will air this year.

According to Variety Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences executive director Bill Kramer said all categories “will be included in the live stream.” This means that the eight categories removed from last year’s broadcast will be broadcast in 2023, these categories include:

  • original score
  • Makeup and hairstyle
  • Documentary short film
  • Film editing
  • manufacturing design
  • animated short film
  • live short film
  • Sound

The goal of removing these categories last year was to simplify the ceremony and shorten the show a bit. However, the decision has received strong backlash as it sidelined integral aspects of filmmaking into an evening dedicated to celebrating all people who create films.

Dunes director Denis Villeneuve responded to the news to say that it was a “mistake” and that cinema is “a team effort”. Villeneuve’s film also won four of the eight categories excluded. as a big fan of Dunes, it is clear that the sound, the score, the editing and the production design all play a fundamental role in the film. The fact that these artists, along with the other four winners of various other projects, have not been recognized on live television is quite sad.

Steven Spielberg also chimed in on the controversy, he noted that he believes film is the “most collaborative medium” and that people who make a film together become a “family” and that everyone’s work is “indispensable”. I guess we will see the latest Spielberg film. The Fabelmans in this year’s competition, not only for acting and showmanship, but for all the wonderful work done by the representatives of the technical categories.

After last year’s backlash over this issue, the Academy has now reinstated all eight of the show’s categories, meaning everyone will have a chance to take the stage and accept one of film’s biggest awards in front of everyone in the room. and looking at home .

Will Smith watches Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards

Now, after the ceremony, the excluded categories were in the background because all eyes were on Will Smith after slapping Chris Rock . Making sure that doesn’t happen again is obviously a top priority for streaming, and there’s been a lot of talk about Will Smith and his latest film. Emancipation, and whether it should be a contender this year.

Like the Academy with categories, Smith talked about the slap. this week, saying the night was “horrible”. He also said he hopes those involved in his latest film can still have their moment of glory and not be “penalized for awful moments of indiscretion”.

We’ll have to wait and see how Emancipation performs at the 2023 awards ceremony. For now though, we know one thing for sure, every category will be represented and everyone involved in the 2022 Film Schedule films that receives nominations will have a chance to shine on stage.
