For James Cameron, “we are not doing enough to fight climate change”

The director, a guest on the France Inter morning paper this Thursday on the occasion of the premiere of ‘Avatar: El camino del agua’, returned to the ecological theme present in the second part of the franchise.

thirteen years later Avatarits second part, Avatar, the path of water, will be released in theaters on December 14. By 2009, this eco-fable featuring blue-skinned Navis facing off against conquering humans had become the biggest theatrical hit of all time.

If “the bar is high”, James Cameron, assured in the morning of France Inter this Thursday, that the objective of this sequel is “not to surpass the first Avatar”. “The goal is to make it profitable to do the third, fourth and fifth,” he said.

The director is also confident that ecological themes will once again be very present in his new film, which this time proposes a trip to Pandora’s aquatic domain.

“It is not a film about aliens from another planet, it is a film about us, for us and made by us. […] One of the objectives of this film is to awaken our connection with nature through a fantastic story”, declares the director at the microphone of France Inter.

And to add: “It’s entertainment, but sometimes I think that a movie can touch us in the depths of our soul and remind us of who we are.

“We went from denial to acceptance”

For James Cameron, this new part ofAvatar contrasts two aspects of ourselves. A darker side represented by humans who “consume and destroy” and the better side of ourselves embodied by the Navis.

“They preserve nature, they appreciate each other. It’s really their two ideas that are confronted in the film,” he says.

Asked about the issue of global warming, the director believes that “we are not doing enough.” “We went from a state of denial where we weren’t prepared to face it to a state of acceptance and powerlessness. And we skipped the middle part,” he explains to France Inter’s microphone.

And to conclude: “We must fight not feel defeated because we can work together. One of the foundations of humanity is cooperation, not fighting, not aggression. Maybe Avatar can express that.”
