Virulent charge against the British press, the documentary series harry and meghanof which Netflix broadcasts the first three episodes from this morning, draws a parallel between the fate of Princess Diana, harassed for much of her life by the paparazzi, and Meghan.
Diana’s shadow thus looms over the first two episodes. The story of the princess is the common thread of the documentary. She is also the most present family member in this documentary.
“I don’t have many memories of my mother, confesses Prince Harry. It’s as if I subconsciously repressed them. But I will always remember her laugh, her laugh, that mischievous laugh.”
“Constantly in my mother’s face”
Permanently associated with the princess, the paparazzi are an integral part of the documentary.
“In most of my memories, I’m surrounded by paparazzi,” Harry insists. And indeed we see hordes of photographers following each of his public appearances, on vacation in the sun or in the mountains. “I saw them all the time on my mother’s face,” Harry recalled.
The documentary thus returns several times to the harassment suffered by Princess Diana. “After her divorce [de ses parents] the harassment has reached another level”, he stresses, referring to the “pain and suffering of the women who marry in this institution”.
“The same empathy”
“To see a woman I love experience this outpouring of hate from the press again. It’s hard, ”she says again.
The prince also compares Meghan to his mother. “There are so many things about Meghan, in the way she is, that remind me of my mother. She has the same compassion, the same empathy,” he says.
The images also show Meghan presenting a portrait of the princess to her son Archie. “It’s your grandmother Diana,” she whispers to him.
Finally, Harry claims to be from his mother, claiming to have inherited certain character traits from her. “My mother certainly made most, if not all, of her decisions with her heart. And I am my mother’s son.”
